From staff reports

MOORESVILLE — Salisbury’s best boys tennis run in eight years ended on Thursday afternoon with a 5-4 loss to Brevard.

Salisbury (21-1) set some records this year but lost a thriller in the Western final against Brevard’s  undefeated Blue Devils at the Lake Norman Tennis Center.

Salisbury’s last trip to the Western final ended with a 2010 loss to Newton-Conover.

Salisbury lost 1, 2 and 3 singles but got out of singles with a 3-all tie thanks to wins by Adam Drye (No. 4), Sean Archer (No. 5) and Juan Salazar (No. 6). Jander Rodas-Palacios lost at No. 3 on a  tiebreaker.

Archer/Salazar won at No. 3 doubles. Salisbury’s Ethan McGee/Rodas-Palacios lost at No. 1 doubles, and the  No. 2 doubles team of Drye/Roarke Burton dropped a very tight match to end it.

Brevard moves on to play for the state title in Greensboro against Carrboro on Saturday. Brevard is in the state championship match for the fifth straight time. In four of those seasons, Brevard knocked Salisbury out of the playoffs.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS (AP) —  Franklin Rollin homered and singled twice, scoring a couple of runs while also driving home two as the Hickory Crawdads topped the Kannapolis Intimidators 5-3 on Thursday.

Yohel Pozo doubled and singled for Hickory.

Hickory took the lead in the first when Tyreque Reed hit an RBI double and then scored on a two-run single by Tyler Ratliff.

After Hickory added two runs in the second on a home run by Rollin, the Intimidators cut into the deficit in the second inning when Michael Hickman hit a two-run home run.

The Intimidators saw their comeback attempt come up short after Justin Yurchak hit an RBI single, bringing home Laz Rivera in the seventh inning to cut the Hickory lead to 5-3.

Kannapolis missed a couple of additional scoring opportunities, leaving the bases loaded in the fifth and seventh innings.

Hickory right-hander Alex Eubanks (3-3) picked up the win after allowing two runs on six hits over five innings. Opposing starter John Parke (4-2) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game after giving up five runs and 10 hits over five innings. Sal Mendez pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for his first save of the season.

Stranding 12 men on base, the Intimidators did not take advantage of some good scoring chances in the loss.
