Yesterday: Landis baseball stars of 1912-14

Dr. Randy Lassiter provided this old photograph (from a newspaper clipping) of a group of Landis baseball players, circa 1912-14, according to information in the caption. From left, the players included Ben Fleming, Mack Roberts, George W. Wright Sr., Arthur Young, Bud Spears, Jim Bostian and Webb Sechler (at back). Lassiter and the Rowan Museum are planning a June 16 special event, ‘Batter Up: A Salute to Southern Rowan Baseball,’ to be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the China Grove Roller Mill, 308 N. Main St., China Grove. The day’s proceeds go toward operating expenses and maintenance of the roller mill. Sponsorships are available. For more information on how to contribute or on the day itself, contact Lassiter at 704-640-1942. The exhibit on baseball will be housed at the roller mill into the fall.
