Area Sports Briefs: Intimidators win again; playoff times set for this week

ASHEVILLE — Luis Gonzalez homered and doubled twice, driving home two runs as the Kannapolis Intimidators topped the Asheville Tourists 7-5 on Sunday.
Kannapolis grabbed a 6-2 lead in the fifth after Laz Rivera hit a two-run home run as part of a five-run inning.
Zach Lewis (1-0) got the win in relief. Jake Elliott got his second save.
Prep playoffs
In 2A tennis, Salisbury hosts Lexington in a third-round playoff matchup this afternoon.

On Tuesday, Salisbury plays at North Davidson at 7 p.m. in a third-round 2A game.
Also on Tuesday, Carson plays at Marvin Ridge in a third-round 3A game at 7 p.m. WSAT will broadcast the Carson game and will have some updates on the Salisbury game.

Carson’s softball team plays North Buncombe at 6 p.m. at home on Tuesday in a third-round 3A matchup.

On Wednesday, Salisbury’s soccer team hosts C.D. Owen at 6 p.m. in a third-round 2A contest.
Local golf
The McCanless Couples group braved the heat on Sunday in another competitive match.
The team of Susan Wydner, Harry Owens and Mary & Gene Seaford eclipsed the team of Ralph Carver, Azalee Story and David Huneycutt.
Gene Seaford had closest to the pin and Carver had longest putt.
College golf
The No. 12 seed UNC Greensboro men’s golf team will play in the NCAA Stockton Regional today through Wednesday at the par-72, 7,239-yard The Reserve at Spanos Park.
Paired with No. 10 Iowa State and No. 12 UC Irvine, UNCG will start on No. 10 at 11:55 a.m., Eastern time.
Joseph Cansler will start things off for the Spartans, and Jonathan Brightwell, Bryce Hendrix, Josh Stockwell and Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) will tee off at 11-minute intervals.
Golf Channel will feature expanded coverage of the final day of the regional championships on Wednesday. Lyerly enters the tournament with the sixth-best stroke average of 72.97, and that’s second-best among freshmen.
College baseball
The NCAA Division II Baseball Committee announced its field of 56 teams for regional play.
Wingate, seeded sixth, and seventh-seeded Lincoln Memorial represent the SAC. Eight regionals will be played on May 17-20.
Wingate plays No. 3 Belmont Abbey in the first round. Lincoln Memorial plays No. 2 Georgia College. Top-seeded North Greenville is the host for the double-elimination event. Columbus State is seeded fourth and will tangle with No. 5 UNC Pembroke in the first round.

The No. 1 seeded Pfeiffer Falcons (37-5) captured the ECAC Division III softball championship on Sunday afternoon with a dominant 8-0 road victory in five innings against Penn St.-Behrend (32-13).

Carson Junior Legion sign-ups are tonight at 7 at the ball field. Players should bring a birth certificate and a parent to fill out paperwork.
