It never fails. When reading ‘Love You Forever’ by Robert Munsch to a student recently, my voice cracked. My eyes filled with tears. The words, “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always. As long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be,” got me again. In the book, the mother watches her son grow from a baby to a father, as she grows old and frail. The roles reverse, and the son then takes care of his mother.

Reading it always reminds me of how life changes.

We average 11 changes of address and 10-15 changes of employment.

Friends change. Families change. Relationships change.

Music, technology, transportation …all change.

Was there really a time I didn’t have a microwave? A cell phone?

Even words change. When I am told to ‘swipe’ my debit card, I always smile and think about what that word used to mean.

Our looks change. I look in the mirror and think, “Whose face is that?”

Change changes our lives. Some change is good. Some change is hard. Even good change can be hard.

Usually, we just have to keep the change. We adapt.

‘Love You Forever’ was written after the author’s life was changed when he suffered the loss of two stillborn babies. He adapted to that change by writing a book that has spoken to the hearts of millions.

Sometimes, our lives can make us feel like we are on a roller coaster. Up, down, fast, slow, loops, turns, bumpy, smooth. We adapt. Personally, I like to cling tightly to that protective bar right in front of me! (I also love hearing the sound of that bar lock in place right before the ride begins.)

The safety and security that protective bar provides reminds me of God – the One I cling tightly to during my ever-changing life of changes.

No matter where I am. No matter what I am. No matter where I was. No matter what I was. No matter where I will be. No matter what I will be. God has a plan for me.

Our lives of change can be used for His Glory.

*That’s a promise I like to cling to.

*Nothing feels as good as going to the One that never changes.
