College Softball: Indians qualify for SAC tournament

SALISBURY — Catawba split a Senior Day doubleheader with Carson-Newman on Saturday and qualified to play in the single-elimination  South Atlantic Conference  Tournament.

Catawba (20-25, 8-12) and Carson-Newman (29-19, 8-12) tied for seventh place.

Seventh-seeded Catawba will play second-seeded Coker on Friday, April 27, at Anderson at 3 p.m.

Catawba lost Saturday’s first game, 5-0, managing only one hit. Delane Smith had the Catawba hit. Lacie Rinus tossed the shutout for the Eagles.

Catawba rallied to win the nightcap, 3-2.

Catawba got a run in the first inning on hits by Leah Huggins and Smith.

Catawba was down 2-1 going to the bottom of the sixth, but scored the tying and go-ahead runs with a bunt single and  the aid of several errors.

Madison Hunter pitched into the fifth inning for the Indians.

Brooke Walser was the winner in relief.
