SALISBURY — For the 10th year in a row, the April Is for Arts gallery crawl will be hosted at Homewood Suites in Davidson.
But this year will be the first time it has been hosted by residents of the Trinity Oaks retirement community in Salisbury.
Russell and Nancy Gavitt have been organizing the show for its 10-year run. They moved to Trinity Oaks in the last year.
“We researched, actually, 22 different ones, and we decided Trinity Oaks by far was the best relative to the lifestyle we were looking for,” Russell said.
Russell, a retired 3M Aerospace employee, said he and Nancy have been taking photographs since they were teenagers. But it wasn’t until he retired in 2000 that they were able to work in photography full time.
In addition to commercial work, Russell made a deal with Homewood Suites in Davidson to display a rotating exhibition of his and Nancy’s photographs.
“We have been in the hallways with our art for 10 years,” Russell said.
The annual art show is hosted in the Homewood Suites “lodge,” which Russell said has a “home feeling.”
“And we always have music, and we always have food and the bar is always open,” Russell said.
The show will feature 12 artists who work in a variety of mediums. Russell said artists for the show are chosen for the variety and quality of their work.
“We’ve had potters. We’ve had another woodworker. We’ve had one woman that had an affinity for picking up old jewelry and making it new again,” Russell said.
Another artist who will be in the show, Barbara Whenal, has been a coppersmith for seven years.
“I used to paint; I used to do other things. But it was like I found copper and it’s been like a real easy thing to continue doing,” Whenal said.
Whenal and her husband also live at Trinity Oaks. They moved from northern Wisconsin two and a half years ago.
“I was able to fashion a studio in our cottage here on campus. And so that worked out really well for me,” Whenal said.
Russell and Louanna See will also be featured in the show, and they also live at Trinity Oaks.
Russell does woodwork and makes furniture. Louanna makes cork and bulletin boards using wine corks.
The other artists being featured are: Julie Choi, who makes jewelry; Bill and Joanne French, who make stained glass and jewelry; Pete Gandle, wood carvings; Franklin Kernes, abstract fine art; Nicole Minnis, Caribbean fine art and music; and Joyce Wynes, abstract fine art and illustrations.
The show will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Homewood Suites, 125 Harbour Place Drive in Davidson.
Food will be provided by Brickhouse Tavern. Dessert will be by The Icing and the Cake.
The gallery crawl is free and open to the public.
“We think it’ll be a great date night for people to come over (and) relax,” Russell said.
