Area Sports Briefs: Arnott pitches no-hitter for Raiders

LANDIS — South Rowan sophomore Whitley Arnott pitched her second no-hitter of the season on  Tuesday.

She struck out 13 as the Raiders (10-3, 9-2) won, 7-0, against East Davidson in Central Carolina Conference softball action.

Brooke Lowery led South’s offense with three hits, including a homer.

Anna Blume also homered, while Ashlyn Plott contributed two hits.

OLIN — Hannah Roberts pitched a five-hit shutout and also drove in two runs as West Rowan won at North Iredell, 6-0, in North Piedmont Conference action on Tuesday.

Mary Sobataka hit another homer, her fifth in the last three games, and drove in two runs for the Falcons (7-3, 2-1).

Alexandra Linder had a double, while Taylor Walton drove in a run.

CHINA GROVE — Carson crushed Statesville, 15-0, in a three-inning North Piedmont Conference contest on Tuesday.

Katie Jewell was the winning pitcher for the Cougars (6-1, 3-0).

Jewell and Kary Hales had three hits each as the Cougars pounded 19 hits.

Kaitlyn Honeycutt, Ashlyn Ellenburg and Katelyn McGee had two hits each. McGee had two doubles.

Salisbury won a forfeit from Thomasville in the CCC. East Rowan lost to South Iredell, 12-6, in the NPC.

• Davie lost 11-4 to Glenn in Central Piedmont Conference action. Shea Woody had two hits for the War Eagle, and Sydney Smith knocked in two.

Prep baseball

CHINA GROVE — Carson pounded Statesville, 18-2, in a five-inning NPC contest on Tuesday.

Owen White had a triple and double and drove in five runs for the Cougars. He broke the Carson record for  career hits that had been held by Heath Mitchem.

Cameron Prugh and C.P. Pyle had two hits for the Cougars (8-3, 3-0), who have won seven in a row.

Maddux Holshouser pitched three hitless innings with eight strikeouts for the win, and Logan Rogers and Deacon Wike finished off the Hounds.

Carson hosts West Rowan in a big NPC contest on Thursday. White is expected to pitch that one for the Cougars.

OLIN — West Rowan is starting to turn things around and won at North Iredell, 6-0, in NPC action on Tuesday.

Olen Stamper fired the shutout for the Falcons  (5-5, 2-1) and had 10 strikeouts.

West took control with  a two-run second and got three more runs in the fourth.

Logan Sproul drove in two. Mykal Berger had two hits and knocked one in. Daniel Durham had his best offensive game of the season with three hits. Cameron Graham had two hits and scored twice. J.T. Fecteau, a freshman catcher, had two hits and knocked in two runs.

TROUTMAN — East Rowan was in  a struggle at South Iredell, but kept pace with Carson and West Rowan with an 8-5 NPC win over the Vikings.

Hayden Setzer was the winning pitcher and also led off the game with a homer.

Will Brown connected on a two-run homer for East to tie the game at 3-all.

It was 4-all going to the top of the seventh.

That’s when East scored four runs. Brown got the winning rally started with an infield hit. Charlie Klingler hit a ball that got past a diving left fielder to plate Brown with the go-ahead run.

Wayne Mize provided some insurance with a two-run double.

Setzer threw 91 pitches in six innings. With a four-run lead, Jake Davis pitched the seventh and allowed one run.

LANDIS — South Rowan stopped a  seven-game skid by lambasting Thomasville, 19-0, on Tuesday in Central Carolina Conference action.

Zach Powers was sharp on the bump for the Raiders (3-7, 3-7). He allowed one hit in four innings, and was backed by a lot of offense.

ROBBINS — North Rowan lost at North Moore, 8-1, in Yadkin Valley Conference play on Tuesday.

Caelan Stinson and Jordan Goodine had the only hits for the Cavaliers (3-8, 3-6). Freshman Chase Shoaf pitched well, but the Cavaliers had some costly errors.

Sam Walker went 3-for-3 with three runs scored to lead Northwest Cabarrus to a 5-3 South Piedmont Conference win against A.L. Brown. The Wonders (1-8, 0-3) got two hits from Keyon Rice.

• Davie rode some great pitching from Carson Whisenhunt to a 5-0 Central Piedmont Conference win against West Forsyth.

Prep golf

SALISBURY — East Rowan put all five golfers in the 30s on  Tuesday and won a North Piedmont Conference match at McCanless.

Alex Miller fired a sizzling 32. Austin Miller shot 35, Colby Patterson shot 36,  William Garland shot 37, and Bryson Sprinkle had a 38.

Jeff Carlton’s 37 sparked West Rowan, while Zain Tucker shot 40 for Carson.

ADVANCE — Co-medalist Alex Antosek (38), Hank Robins (40) and Will Fowler (41) led Salisbury to a win against Davie County at Oak Valley on Tuesday.

Prep tennis

TYRO — Hugh Bennett won at No. 1 singles for West Davidson on Monday, but undefeated Salisbury took the rest of the matches. The top-ranked Hornets (12-0) swept doubles and got singles wins from Roarke Burton, Adam Drye, Jander Rodas-Palacios, Sean Archer and Juan Salazar.

Carson tennis won on Monday and Tuesday in the North Piedmont Conference, topping West Rowan, 5-4, and cruising against Statesville, 9-0.

North Rowan won twice on Monday, taking a doubleheader from Albemarle.

Catawba baseball

WILSON —   Bryan Ketchie and Chance Bowden led the Catawba Indians to a 10-5 win at Barton on Tuesday.

Catawba (17-16) moved above .500 for the first time this season.

Former West Rowan star Ketchie pitched six innings for his first win of the season. Bowden (Salisbury) hit his ninth homer and 13th double. Jackson Raper had two hits. Kyle Smith had a bases-loaded triple.

SALISBURY — Catawba softball rolled to a sweep of Queens on Tuesday at Whitley Field.

In a 5-2 win, Carlee Brawley drove in two runs to back strong pitching by Madison Hunter.

In an 8-0 victory, Delane Smith homered, Brawley went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Jordan Dean was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Brooke Walser pitched the five-inning shutout  for the Indians (18-15, 6-2) and  struck out six.
