Sacred Heart Catholic School

Sacred Heart Catholic School seventh grader A.J. Flynn recently won the school’s geography bee and has been named the 2018 Annual Geographic Bee.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the National Geographic Bee, which was developed by the National Geographic Society in 1989 in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the U.S.

A.J. Flynn will advance to the next level of competition, a qualifying test to determine state competitors. All school champions are eligible to win the National Championship and its first prize — a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the society and an all-expense-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galapagos Islands aboard the new National Geographic Endeavour II — at the National Championship in Washington, D.C.

Sacred Heart Catholic School also recently held its annual science fair.

Winners at the middle school level were: AJ Flynn, Drew Hansen, Bryce Mason, Jacob Shores and Bree Whittington.

Elementary winners included:  Mary Kathryn Aycock, Aidan Melton, and Evan Miller.  Honorable mentions were Delaney Fisher, Cooper Fleeman, George Miller, Lillian Rattz, Miguel Villalobos and Kyna Zaldivar.

These students will compete at UNC-Charlotte in the District 6 competition of the NC Science and Engineering Fair Feb. 16 and 17.

Scholarship recipients

First United Methodist Church in China Grove has announced the 2017 Walter and Emma Meyers Scholarship recipients.

The recipients and their respective schools of education are as follows: Melanie Beck, UNC Pembroke; Issac Bell, N.C. State; Austin Chrismon, UNC Chapel Hill; Grayson Haff, UNC Chapel Hill; Sara Holmes, Appalachian State; Ryan Jones, Appalachian State; Emerina Kelly, NC State; Janssen Keiger, Butler University; Hannah Leonard, East Carolina University; Sara Locklear, Campbell University; Haley Newton, Wingate University; Jared Seamon, Catawba College; Patrick Street, Pfeiffer University and Rusty Watts, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

Walter and Emma Meyers were beloved members of First United Methodist China Grove. They loved their Lord and their church family, especially the children and youth. One of their final wishes was to help members and their families to further their education. Therefore, these scholarships were possible through their generosity and unselfish love for others.

Greensboro College

Richard Caleb Hughes and Marvin Spencer Scruggs, both of Salisbury, were named to the Greensboro College Dean’s List for the fall 2017 semester.

To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student must have a 3.5 grade-point average or better for the semester while having taken at least half of his or her course credit hours at Greensboro College’s main campus.

The Citadel

Logan Miller, of Kannapolis, was named to the Citadel’s Dean’s List for his academic achievements during the 2017 fall semester.

The Dean’s List is a recognition given to cadets and students who are registered for 12 or more semester hours and whose grade point average is 3.20 or higher, with no grade of incomplete and no grade below C for work in a semester.

Presbyterian College

Elizabeth Ann Fowler, a senior English and French major from Salisbury, was named to the President’s List during the 2017 fall semester. The President’s List is composed of students who earn a 4.0 grade point average.
