Area Sports Briefs: Gurley goes for 400th win at West; Gabriel closing in on Carson record

West Rowan hosts South Iredell in North Piedmont Conference basketball tonight.

Boys coach Mike Gurley seeks his 400th win at the helm of the Falcons. He’s 399-183 at West. Counting his tenure in Lexington, Gurley has 501 career wins.

West’s boys have won four in a row and have started NPC play 2-0. South Iredell’s boys also are 2-0.

West’s Caleb Mauldin is the county’s top scorer with 23.5 points per game.

West’s Wendy Wilson is the county’s top girls scorer with 22.2 points per game.

Carson makes the short trip to East Rowan to take on the Mustangs in NPC play.

Carson’s boys (14-1) are off to a 2-0 start in the league, while Carson’s girls (14-2) are 1-1 in the league.

Carson senior Olivia Gabriel (1,444 career points) needs just 15  points to break the program scoring record held by Kelly Dulkoski.

In Central Carolina Conference action, Salisbury is home against West Davidson, while South Rowan travels to Ledford.

Salisbury’s girls needed 26 points from Anayia Fulson to get past West Davidson in the first meeting. Salisbury’s boys own a one-game lead in the CCC. They handled West Davidson by 11 points in the first meeting.

South Rowan’s boys will be trying to sweep Ledford.

South’s girls will be looking to avenge an early-season loss.

North Rowan’s boys host Albemarle in a key contest in the Yadkin Valley Conference.

North  Rowan beat Albemarle, 72-68, in the Cavaliers’ first game of the season.

North Rowan, Albemarle and North Stanly have one league loss each.

Davie’s boys are off to a 2-0 start in the Central Piedmont Conference and host Glenn tonight.

A.L. Brown’s boys got a major win against Carson on Saturday, but they face a difficult  SPC game tonight at Cox Mill, the top-ranked team in 3A.

Prep volleyball

Carson senior Lindsay Elmore was named to the PrepVolleyball.com All-State team. The Queens signee is on the third team.

Cox Mill’s Taylor Rowland North Iredell’s Ashley Hawkins made the first team. Cox Mill’s Courtney Weber is on the second team. Davie’s Tyra Galloway made the third team.

Women’s basketball

Avery Locklear (South Rowan) had 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and no turnovers in UNC Pembroke’s 61-59 win on Wednesday against Augusta. Locklear made some clutch free throws in the final minute.

Amani Ajayi (East Rowan) had nine points and nine rebounds for Averett in Wednesday’s 79-47 romp against Methodist.

Brielle Blaire (North Rowan) had eight points and six rebounds for Texas Tech in a 73-52 loss to Oklahoma.

Alex Allen (Carson) had nine rebounds and three assists as Lynchburg blew out Roanoke, 67-44.  Former Hickory Ridge star Laura McManimen hit four 3-pointers for Roanoke.

Men’s basketball

Will Leckonby (Salisbury) scored eight points for Guilford in Wednesday’s 73-55 win against Randolph.

Prep wrestling

West Rowan is 3-0 in the North Piedmont Conference after beating East Rowan, 57-17. The Falcons are 10-1 overall.

NFL

The Buffalo Bills signed  former Catawba defensive back L.J. McCray, 26, to a reserve/future contract.

McCray played for the San Francisco 49ers in 2014 and 2015.

He’s been with th Carolina Panthers and Bills, but he hasn’t seen any regular season action since 2015.

Middle school hoops

Varsity

Erwin’s girls won against China Grove, 50-19, to break a tie for first place. China Grove had beaten Erwin earlier in the season, ending a long Erwin winning streak.

Mary Spry led the Eagles with 15 points. Leah Hinceman scored eight, and Madie Honeycutt and Hannah Isley scored six each.

Iyonna Parker scored 10 for China Grove.

Erwin won against Southeast, 52-18.

Haley Dalton scored 11, Honeycutt and Spry scored 10 each, and Olivia McCray had seven.

In other girls scores, Knox rolled 49-23 against Southeast,  and North Rowan won 49-27.

North Rowan’s boys scored with five seconds left and beat West Rowan, 39-38.

Noah Loeblein led West with 21 points. Jason Artis had eight and Spenser Harrison had scored six.

Casey Gouge, Nigel McManus and Jacob Joseph had strong defensive games for West.

Knox’s boys defeated West Rowan, 48-38.

James Wooding led the Trojans with 15 points. Savion Freeman had 11, and Cameron Stout scored 10.

China Grove beat Erwin, 34-24, Southeast outscored Knox, 57-51, and Mooresville won 48-15 against Corriher-Lipe.

The conference tournament starts on Saturday, Jan. 13, at Southeast.

   

Jayvees

China Grove’s boys won against Corriher-Lipe, 40-34. Cameron Burleyson scored 17 for the Red Devils.  D’Arrion Cuthbertson had 11 and Noah Walker 10.

Chase Redman scored 11 for the Yellow Jackets. Elijah Homes scored 10, and Gabe Kincaid had six.

Erwin’s girls won against Southeast, 26-21.

Icesis Nwafor scored 14 for the Eagles, and Hannah Waddell scored five.

Laney Riley led the Patriots with eight points.

Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart’s varsity girls defeated Our Lady of Grace of Greensboro, 40-34. Rachel McCullough had 27 points and 13 rebounds. Sutton Webb had 12 points and three steals.

Sacred Heart’s boys won against Our Lady of Mercy, 54-19.   Jalon Walker poured in 22 for the Dolphins.  Nick Antosek scored 10, Easton Morris had six and Miles Lester scored five.

Rowan Rampage

The fifteen new, listed alphabetically, are Donna Andres, Scott Bankhead, Hal “Skinny” Brown, Chris Cammack, Joey Cheek, Wes Chesson, Laura DuPont, Mindy Ballou Fitzpatrick, Bill Hayes, Jack Holley, Paul Jones, Mike Martin, Frank “Jakie” May, Joe West, and Fred Whitfield.

They will be enshrined during the 55th annual induction banquet on the evening of Friday, May 4, at the Raleigh Convention Center. An afternoon news conference will be held on Thursday, May 3, at 4 p.m. at the N.C. Museum of History, located at 5 East Edenton Street.
