SALISBURY — The Rowan Retired School Personnel donated $500 to Communities in Schools during a board meeting last week.
“In honor of American Education Week, our donation is dedicated to the educators and other school personnel of Rowan County,” said Lila Bostian, president of the organization.
Ron Turbyfill, executive director of Communities in Schools, thanked the board members.
“We are very happy to have your support, and we will put this money to good use,” he said.
Rowan Retired School Personnel members have been active in the community in other ways, as well. Last year, they volunteered over 2,700 hours by tutoring in schools and hosting their annual Soup Luncheon in January.
In addition to physical help, they provide monetary support for one graduating high school senior each year. The organization awards a $1,000 scholarship to a graduate of one of Rowan County’s seven high schools who plans to major in education.
The scholarship is funded by member donations, memorials for deceased educators, silent auctions at annual meetings and the Soup Luncheon.
The $500 donation for Communities in Schools was made possible by member dues.
The organization meets at 10:30 a.m. the third Wednesday of each month at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
