Local Bridge with Myrnie McLaughlin

This week we are experiencing a decrease in attendance due to our players taking advantage of the Charlotte Regional tournament and the greater master point awards. There is another opportunity for higher point awards at the High Point sectional tournament Nov. 3-5. For full details visit www.CCBAUnit169.org

I have been having trouble trying to write this bridge “lesson” on Responsive Doubles in a concise and helpful way. My source was the ACBL web site. You are holding a hand with 6-7 points and two good suits. The bidding has proceeded as follows: LHO opens with 1 Club, partner either doubles or bids a suit, RHO raises his partner’s suit 1 level, then you are next. With 6-7 points and 2 possible suits, bidding a double, gives this information to partner at a low level and lets partner decide where he wants to place the contract. By coincidence, board  18 from the Oct. 20 game could have been an opportunity to use this double. This board is the featured board. N/S vulnerable East dealing

Winning the Oct. 20 Evergreen game N/S. Strat A: tied for 1st -2nd Ruth Bowles and Marie Pugh with Fern Albracht and Judy Gealy, 3rd Pat Featherston and Dick Brisbin. Strat B: 1st Beth Shafer and Ron Caudle, 2nd Pat Macon and Patsy Reynolds; E/W Strat A: 1st Margaret and Chuck Rimer, 2nd Judy Hurder and Toni Iossi, 3rd BettyBonner Steele and Rosemary Sokolowski. Strat B: 1st Genny Mozolak and Joe O’Brien.

The scores at our Oct. 24  Women’s Club game were very close. With a small game and players largely on the same level this can and does happen. Winners: tied for 1st-2nd Judy Gealy and Fern Albracht with John and Myrnie McLaughlin, and tied for 3rd -4th-5th were Margaret and Chuck Rimer with Judy Hurder and Pat Macon with Betty Bills and Beth Shafer.

Hope all of the tournament attendees did well and look forward to seeing you next week.
