Area Sports Briefs: Runners qualify for state

In  3A Midwest Regional cross country at Charlotte’s McAlpine Park on Saturday, A.L. Brown’s Brandon Hernandez placed third in 15:44. The Wonders finished 10th in the boys team scoring.

The top six teams in team scoring advanced to state competition, as well as the top seven runners not on qualifying teams.

Carson was eighth, West Rowan was ninth, and East Rowan was 11th.

East Rowan’s Sean Incardona was an individual state qualifier. He was 23rd in 17:00.

West Rowan’s Thomas Waldo was 31st, running 17:10, and also qualified for the state event.

Zac Barbee led Carson. He was 42nd in 17:23.

In the 3A girls regional  in Charlotte, Carson’s  Taylor Conrad finished 23rd in 20:17 and qualified for the state meet.

Carson’s Taylor Wiggins, who overcame a knee injury, ran 21:19 and finished 34th. The senior qualified for the state meet.

West Rowan’s Megyn Spicer ran 21:59 and got the last individual qualifying spot. She finished 38th.

East Rowan was led by Elizabeth Avalos. She was 59th in 23:28.

Lani Isley (46th), Olivia Gabriel (53rd) and Kimberly Barrera (67th) were the other scorers for seventh-place Carson. East was 13th, while West was 15th.

Gray Stone’s teams advanced to the 1A state championships. The Gray Stone boys were fourth and the girls were second in the 1A Midwest Regional.

Prep volleyball

North Iredell swept defending state champ Cox Mill in the fourth round of the 3A state playoffs on Saturday.

Top-seeded North Iredell will host No. 2 seed Marvin Ridge in the Western final.

In 4A, Reagan won 3-1 against Hickory Ridge on Saturday to reach the Western final against Hough.

West Iredell swept Fred T. Foard on Saturday and will take on North Surry in the Western final.

Prep girls tennis

Salisbury’s doubles team of Maria Capito/Julia Honeycutt lost in the 2A state semifinals on Saturday in Cary, falling 6-2, 7-6 to Smoky Mountain’s Madison Polyasko/Vernoica Judson.

The Smoky Mountain girls went on to win the state title against a Lake Norman Charter pair.

In the 4A tennis state tournament in Raleigh, Davie’s Laura Becker fell in the semifinals to South Meck’s Jenna Thompson, who went on to win the state title.

In the 1A tennis state tournament in Cary, Gray Stone’s Emma Bost lost in the final to Tarboro’s Brenna Bryant.

In the 3A tennis state tournament in Burlington,    Cox Mill’s Hannah Jiang and Concord’s Kate Earnhardt lost in the semfinals.

Earnhardt lost to Charlotte Catholic’s Rose Kenny, who went on to win the championship. Kenny eliminated West Rowan’s Payton Holt in the regional.

Salisbury plays Monday at Surry Central in the third round of the 2A dual team state playoffs.
