Rowan weather: Tornado watch in effect until 9 p.m.

Rowan, Cabarrus, Davidson, Davie, Iredell and Stanly counties, as well as numerous other counties to our north and west, are under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. tonight.

A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes. No tornadoes have been spotted at this time.

If a tornado is seen, the watch may be changed to a warning.

Stay alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.

A strong cold front will move through the region today. A broken line of thunderstorms is expected ahead of the front, likely moving into the area by mid-afternoon.

Some of these thunderstorms will be severe, with isolated tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail the

primary threats. Heavy rainfall could lead to isolated flash flooding.

The chance of precipitation today is 90 percent, with thunderstorms possible after 11 a.m. The high will be 70, with southeast wind at 10-15 mph, gusting up to 25 mph. Fog will form after 5 p.m. One to two inches of rain is possible.

Tonight we have an 80 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, some with heavy rain. A half to three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible. The low will be 51, with southwest wind at 5-14 mph, gusting as high as 23 mph. Fog may form later.

The sun returns Tuesday, with a high of 70 and light west wind shifting to the southwest at 5-9 mph. It will be a partly cloudy night, with a low of 41 and Northwest wind at 3-7 mph.

Temperatures drop at least 10 degrees for Wednesday, with a high around 60 under sunny skies. Wind will be from the west at 5-7 mph in the afternoon.

Frost is possible Wednesday night, with a low of 37. Frost could form around 3 a.m., and will linger into Thursday morning.

After the frost melts Thursday, it will be a sunny day with a high of 62. A mostly clear night will have a low of 39.

Friday will be sunny and 68, with a clear night and a low of 44.

Saturday will be mostly sunny and 69. A 30 percent chance of showers moves in Saturday night, with mostly cloudy skies and a low of 46.

Sunday will be partly sunny and 63, with a 40 percent chance of showers.
