Letter to the editor: Time for tax reform: Now

Our NC legislature has done a great job on tax reform. As a result, NC families keep more of their own money, the improvement in our state unemployment rate is greater than improvement in the national unemployment rate, and NC has become one of the most business friendly states in the nation (more new jobs to come).
With a national tax code that is over 74,000 pages long, with a tax code that hasn’t been significantly updated in 30 years, now is the time for the nation to follow our state’s lead.
John F. Kennedy eloquently described the benefits of tax cuts — such a contrast to the view that Democrats take today. Both parties need to support tax reform and cuts.
One specific deduction I would like to see eliminated is the deduction for state and local taxes paid. When you and your peer in New York figure out your taxes, you each determine the amount that you owe the federal government in taxes. But, he gets to reduce what he owes by a higher percentage than you do because he lives in a location with higher state and local taxes. You and I should not be penalized because other regions have higher taxes. We should not have to subsidize their federal taxes.
The Salisbury Post regularly runs contact information for our US representatives and senators. Let them know you support tax reform and tax cuts.
