Churches to hold downtown trunk-or-treat event

SALISBURY — Downtown churches are coming together this fall to host a community “Trunk-or-Treat” event.

“This is the very first time we’re going to attempt to do something like that,” Alan Fowler with First Presbyterian Church said.

While First Presbyterian has held a trunk-or-treat event in the past, this year it’s joined by St. John’s Lutheran and First United Methodist Church. In addition to fun for children, the Oct. 29 event also aligns with several goals among the churches — chiefly, Fowler said, unifying the downtown churches and increasing community outreach.

Trunk-or-treat will be held on the Bell Tower lot, 270 West Fisher St., from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29. Children in grades five and under are invited to come troop from truck to truck, filling bags with candy.

Fowler and other organizers are hoping to have 30-50 trunks, but welcome other community members who may want to participate. Trunks can be decorated, but organizers ask that decorations be fall-themed, rather than Halloween-themed.

“Something positive,” Fowler said.

Candy should be individually packaged and peanut free. Portable generators will be available for use. The event will also feature free popcorn, bounce houses and games. It is free and open to the public.

“I think it’ll be a great positive event for the community,” Fowler said.
