Area Sports Briefs: Carson tennis stays tied for first

Carson’s girls tennis team stayed tied for first in the North Piedmont Conference with a 7-2 win against East Rowan on Tuesday.

Carson (11-2, 8-1) is tied with South Iredell. The regular season ends on Thursday.

East (4-7, 3-6) got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles from Lauren Weisensel and Mia Graham. Graham won 7-6 and 6-4 against Siera Fesperman, who hadn’t lost in singles all season. Weisensel prevailed  6-2, 7-5 against Gabi Jolly. Jolly had won their earlier matchup this season.

Carson  got singles wins from (1) Emily Sloop, (4) Jadyn Kirkpatrick, (5) Maci Cooper and (6) Quinnlan Watson. Cooper is 13-0 in singles.

Winning doubles teams for the Cougars were  Jolly/Fesperman, Sloop/Kirkpatrick and Cooper/Watson.

West Rowan lost to South Iredell, 6-3, on Thursday in NPC play.

Payton Holt won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Abby Johnson for a doubles win. Also winning for West was the doubles team of Skylar Jahnke-Mira White.

Salisbury’s match with North Rowan was canceled. The Hornets will  honor their seniors today between matches of a home doubleheader against South Rowan.

Prep cross country

In the Cabarrus Country Championships at Frank Liske Park, A.L. Brown’s Brandon Hernandez was the individual boys champion in 16:06.

Cox Mill won the team title.

Hickory Ridge dominated the girls race, finishing 1-2-3-4-6. Freshman Jaleah Taylor took the individual championship.

South Rowan’s Madison Lowery broke the course record at Boone’s Cave (21:26) and led the Raiders to a victory in a tri-meet with West Davidson and Lexington.

South’s Madison Henry was second. Madison McGuire placed fourth, while  Anahi Reta was fifth.

South Rowan freshman Noah Julian ran 19:13 at Boone’s Cave and led the Raiders to a victory against West Davidson and Lexington.

South’s Ari Moya was second. South’s Nolan Miller placed fifth.

Salisbury’s girls won a meet with East Davidson.

Ellen Simons, Mary Kaufmann, Leah Cressler and Freya Obermuller finished in the top five to lead the Hornets.

Salisbury’s boys won a meet against host Central Davidson and East Davidson.

Michael Lowry placed  second and led the Hornets. Roarke Burton was sixth, while Brody Dillon was seventh.

In the Rowan County Championships, Carson’s Taylor Wiggins suffered an injury to the tendon that connects the shin to the knee cap.

She’ll be out for a  week or more, but she’s optimistic about returning this season.

Prep volleyball

In Central Carolina Conference action, South Rowan stayed on a roll, pounding Thomasville 25-9, 25-12 and 25-20.

Jenna Strickland had 14 digs for the third-place Raiders (14-6, 12-3 CCC).  Janiya Downs  had 16 kills, four aces and  10 digs. Kira Rymer had 15 kills and 10 digs. Michaela Hallman had 24 assists and four aces.

Kendall Walter had eight kills, Kendall  Rockstad had six kills, and Anna Rymer had 10 assists and six aces as South’s jayvees swept the Bulldogs, 25-16 and 25-7. Makenzie McGuire added eight digs.

West Rowan stayed unbeaten at home by rallying to top South Iredell 25-17, 18-25, 18-25, 25-15 and 15-13 on Tuesday.

The Falcons (14-3, 5-2 NPC)  stayed tied for second with Carson and host first-place North Iredell on Thursday.

Carson swept East Rowan 25-16, 25-15 and 25-18 on Tuesday.

Grace Thomas had 29 assists and nine digs. Jaden Vaughn had 13 digs and 10 kills. Mallory Weast had 15 digs and seven kills. Nancy Gamewell had four  digs and five kills. Kary Hales nine digs.  Sophie Andrew had three kills. Lindsay Elmore had eight kills. Katie Blackwell had seven digs and two aces.

For East Rowan, Leah Wyrick had seven kills and 12 assists. Baleigh Hill had 20 digs. Olivia Wright had six kills and three blocks. Megan Beam had five kills.

East Rowan is planning a special Pink Out match for breast cancer awareness at Thursday’s home game with South Iredell.

Ella Cloninger had 10 aces to lead Carson’s jayvees to a sweep. Emma Collins had four kills for the Mustangs.

College men’s golf

UNC Greensboro’s Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) shot 73-71-78 —222 in the Wolfpack Intercollegiate and tied for 36th.

College women’s golf

Catawba finished  14th out of 17 teams at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate Tournament which concluded on Tuesday at Ocean Ridge Plantation.

  Kaley Barts led Catawba with a 15th-place finish. She had a  76 on Tuesday for a 155 total. Sarah Coltrane was 44th with a 162 score.

Wingate took the team title by a single shot over Tusculum and Lenoir-Rhyne.

Catawba will host the Patsy Rendleman Invitational next Monday and Tuesday at the Country Club of Salisbury.

UNC Pembroke’s Alexandria Bare  (South Rowan) shot a pair of 77s in the Myrtle Beach tournament and tied for 10th.  She helped UNCP finish seventh.

College volleyball

  Catawba was knocked off by host Coker in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at the DeLoach Center.  The Cobras won 25-19, 25-20, 16-25 and 25-20.

The Indians dropped to 3-10 and 1-8 SAC.

Kimberly Hurtado posted 11 kills for Catawba. Jade Brooks added 10 kills and 10 digs. Alison Benton recorded 16 digs and Rachel Stanford had 35 assists, 10 digs and six kills.

Catawba returns to action on Saturday, hosting Newberry at 5 p.m.

Local golf

Sixty-seven GARS members played at Corbin Hills.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Bobby Clark with a net of 61.44.  Low ‘B’ Flight player was Clive Mahaffey with a net of 63.65.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Ron Bowers with a net of 64.58. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Doug Lingle with a net of 57.74.

Closest to the pin on No. 2  was won by Clark, and longest putt on No. 9 was won by J.C. Ritchie.

Winners of the team competition with a minus-6  six were  Petrea, Ritchie, Lingle and Ken Miller

Donald Martin, 74, shot a 72. Larry Fowler, 76, shot a 74. Clark, 77, shot a 74. Winsten Mahaffey, 80, shot a 74.  Frank Masingo. 82, shot an 82.  Clive Mahaffey, 82, shot a 78.  Bert Bollinger, 88, shot an 88.  Ritchie, 92, shot an 81.

Larry Fowler and Larry Petrea tied for low net with 71s.
