Area Sports Briefs: White Most Valuable Pitcher at elite event

Carson senior Owen White was spectacular in the Wilson Premier Classic in Peoria, Arizona.
White was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Pitcher. He struck out 15 and didn’t allow a run.
White, who has committed to play baseball at South Carolina, was playing on a Canes team with 22 Division I commits. His squad went 6-0 and won the elite national event.
White pitched a one-hitter on Monday afternoon in the tournament semifinals. He was clocked as high as 93 mph and threw 73 of 99 pitches for strikes.
White also got a win in relief in Sunday’s quarterfinals. He got four outs, throwing 24 pitches.
Prep volleyball
South Rowan’s volleyball team swept North Davidson 26-24, 25-22 and 27-27 in Central Carolina Conference action on Monday.
South (11-6, 9-3 CCC) finished a season sweep of the Black Knights and is in third place in the 10-team CCC.
Janiya Downs has 12 kills; Kira Rymer had 12 digs, 12 kills and four aces; Jenna Strickland had 18 digs, and Michaela Hallman had 14 digs and 14 assists.

In YVC action, North Rowan (0-13, 0-10) lost to Uwharrie Charter 25-12, 25-5 and 25-10.
Prep boys soccer
Cristyan Cabrera had three goals and two assists as West Rowan outscored East Rowan, 7-3, in North Piedmont Conference soccer on Monday.
Jose Martinez scored two goals. Darreon Gitten and Junior Borja had a goal.
Esteban Trujillo, Stevenson Lopez and Luis Vasquez had assists.
Kaleb Isenhour, Luke Hager, Matt Arnsten and Mauricio Sandoval were outstanding on defense.
Alex Kalogeromitros, Landon Ketchie and Will Peeler scored for the Mustangs. Jaxon Mastronunzio and William Garland had assists.

Prep girls tennis
Salisbury defeated Oak Grove, 9-0, to remain undefeated in Central Carolina Conference play on Monday.
Maria Capito, Emma Nianouris, Meredith Burton, Bethanie Stauffer, Skye Mowery and Rachel Seifert all won 6-0 6-0 in singles.
Capito/Nianouris, Stauffer/Burton and Seifiert/Mowery all won 8-0 in doubles.
The Hornets (14-1, 13-0 CCC) have a big home match on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against seventh-ranked Ledford (12-1, 11-1 CCC).

South Rowan got another CCC win on Monday by defeating West Davidson, 7-2. South is 7-5 in the CCC.
College volleyball
Michaela White (Carson) was named UNC Wilmington’s player of the match after recording 27 assists and 13 digs against Hofstra on Sunday.
College golf
Tyler Mulkey (North Rowan) led Catawba golfers on the first day of the King Invitational on Monday with a 74. Catawba is in ninth place at the Country Club of Bristol.
