Letter: School officials owe public explanation for test scores

Reading today’s editorial, “Schools face daunting task,” I applaud those teachers who work in schools receiving poor marks as well as those who somehow make a positive mark.

I remain  in a state of confusion, as promises and major dollars were incentives to deliver Knox Middle School to the A list. Not only did these handsomely paid “educators” depart, both ran as though Hurricane Irma was coming, to better and more lucrative pastures. They promised, but neither delivered.

As a former educator for 32 years, I see the practice of Rowan Salisbury Schools rewarding inept administrators with glowing recommendations, while neglecting the bones of education — i.e.,the teachers and teacher aides — seems to be continuing today. Your words, “No wonder the second half of the co-principalship left in June.”  Knox Middle School received an “F.”

This is inexcusable, and Dr. Moody and the Rowan Salisbury School Board owe us, the taxpayers, an explanation.

More importantly, our children, our students, our future, are the ones who suffer and will continue to suffer as our schools are below par. What kind of excuse or reason may our children expect when leadership pours money into false promise?

To quote your last paragraph, “Every child in Rowan County should be able to attend an A-rated school.” You continue to put the responsibility on parents, teachers, administrators and community. I think the responsibility hinges on the Central Office and Dr. Moody. There is no excuse for inferior education. We must do better.
