Brian Center passes state inspection

SALISBURY — The Brian Center could have Medicare and Medicaid funding restored after a state review earlier this week.

On Aug. 3, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued a public notice that after Sept. 11, the health and rehabilitation facility would no longer provide Medicare and Medicaid services because of noncompliance.

A document obtained by the Post from the CMS listed several instances since the beginning of 2017 in which the Brian Center was out of compliance, including two instances when residents escaped the facility and one instance of sexual assault between residents.

While reports noted that all issues were addressed and corrected, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services chose to break off its agreement with the Brian Center after a second incident in which a resident escaped from a locked ward.

The Brian Center sought to appeal the decision, spokeswoman Annaliese Impink said. Once the public notice was issued, the center immediately requested that the CMS approve a review by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

The request was granted, and inspectors toured the facility Monday and Tuesday to determine whether the Brian Center had corrected the problems cited by CMS. Impink said Thursday that the facility was found to be in compliance with federal requirements.

“The action to decertify the facility from participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs should be rescinded as a result,” she said in an email.
