Area Sports Briefs: Top seeds advance in Rowan Amateur

Top-seeded defending champion Keith Dorsett and second-seeded medalist Nick Lyerly were among the players advancing in Friday’s first round of the  39th annual Horace Billings Rowan Amateur.

Dorsett defeated No. 32 seed Logan Overcash, 6 and 5. Lyerly won against former East Rowan High teammate Ben Rollins, 6 and 5.

The second round and the quarterfinals will be played today at Corbin Hills, as the field is trimmed from 16 to four golfers.

Dorsett will be on the course today at 8:06 a.m. against Ryan Burke.

Lyerly’s match with Ross Brown starts at 8:22.

SHS soccer camp

Coaches Matt Parrish and Taylor Strode will conduct Salisbury’s annual soccer camp from Monday, July 24, through Friday, July 28.

Camp is from 9 until noon daily. Camp will take place at the SHS practice field, behind Wiley Apartments and adjacent to SHS on New St.

Camp costs $65  and includes a  T-shirt.

All proceeds go to SHS soccer and Salisbury athletics. Canp is for rising 7th-12th grades, girls and boys.

All players, regardless of skill level are invited to attend. Participants need to bring shin guards and water. (Water will be available on site as well). A ball is not needed.

Tryouts for the Salisbury boys soccer team start  Monday, July 31, at the same time and location.

Prep basketball

North Rowan graduate Malon Herron-Cuthbertson will be part of Newberry’s  basketball program next season.

Herron-Cuthbertson will redshirt his first year.

The 5-foot-11 point guard played AAU basketball for Team F.L.Y.

College football

Appalachian State nose tackle  MyQuon Stout (Carson) is a second team pick on the preseason All-Sun Belt Conference team.

Stout anchored the middle of ASU’s 3-4, constantly drawing double teams to free up  the Mountaineers’ linebackers.

Intimidators

Blake Rutherford, a player the Chicago White Sox acquired in the Todd Frazier trade with the New York Yankees, had a two-run single to lift Kannapolis to a 5-4 win against West Virginia on Friday.

Mick VanVossen (4-1) earned the win, tossing  scoreless sixth and seventh innings.

The Intimidators welcome Columbia  tonight for  Star Wars Night, featuring a light saber giveaway to the first 100 kids.  Fans will have a chance to interact with Star Wars characters.
