Teenager who drowned at High Rock Lake identified

SALISBURY — A 19-year-old who drowned Wednesday while swimming at High Rock Lake has been identified as Taejone Jamoneyen Williams.
The 2016 North Rowan High School graduate was at the lake with friends and at some point went underwater and did not resurface.
The drowning was reported in the 400 block of Lake Shore Drive. Rescue dive teams were dispatched at 2:59 p.m.
A dive team from the Millers Ferry Fire Department and Rowan County Rescue Squad found Williams just before 4 p.m.
Authorities said Williams could not swim.
No other details have been provided regarding the incident.
The Liberty, Millers Ferry and Gold Hill fire departments responded, along with Rowan County EMS and Rowan County Rescue.
Williams’ mother, Essence Smith Whitney, has created a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral expenses. According to information listed on the donation site, Whitney’s 4-month-old son died just eight months ago.
