Area Sports Briefs: High Point takes series

While High Point didn’t have an impressive regular season,  sixth-seeded Post 87 finished off a victory over No. 2 seed Eastern Randolph in the second round of the Area III playoffs on Friday.

High Point (13-14) took Game 4, 6-5, at Finch Field. High Point won three straight in the series after dropping the opener.

After Eastern Randolph scored three runs in the top of the eighth to forge a 5-all tie, High Point answered with the deciding run in the bottom of the eighth.

Rich Sari pitched six innings for High Point.  Ryan Hopkins had two hits. Jackson Leck drove in two runs.

Jake Taylor had two hits for Eastern Randolph. Jordan Cassell drove in two runs.

High Point advances to play Rowan County (27-1).  That best-of-five series will start at Newman Park on Monday.

The other semifinal will pit Randolph County (23-7)  against Davidson County (12-13), with Game 1 at McCrary Park in Asheboro.

Intimidators

Chicago’s 2017 first-round  pick Jake Burger recorded three hits in his Class A debut, and the Intimidators defeated the Hagerstown Suns 7-5 in a rain-shortened, seven-inning game on Friday night at Intimidators Stadium.

Burger went 3-for-3   with two runs scored.

Starting pitcher Yosmer Solorzano (3-7) pitched seven innings for the win.

East Rowan opens the  best-of-3 Area III championship series at home tonight against  Concord.
