Area Sports Briefs: East Jr. Legion opens semifinal series at home

East Rowan’s Jr. Legion baseball team starts the semifinals of the Area III playoffs at home tonight at 7 p.m.
Undefeated East will be taking on Western Forsyth Blue at Staton Field.

In the other Area III semifinal series, the Cary Bulls will play at Concord’s home field at Mount Pleasant this afternoon at 3 p.m.
Legion baseball
Mocksville will play the first game of its second-round series with Randolph today at 2 p.m. at McCrary Park.
Game 2 in the series also will be played at Randolph.
College football
The 2017 football season marks the 125th anniversary of the first recorded black college football game, which began with two CIAA member institutions.
The CIAA will honor its rich football history throughout the season via the conference’s 125th anniversary social media campaign.
The campaign will highlight consequential moments in CIAA football history from former and current member institutions, records, statistics, and share the stories of CIAA student-athletes who excelled both on and off the field. The celebration will also be displayed using a celebratory football championship logo.
Local golf
Michael Childress shot 77 in the first round of the North & South Junior Amateur in Pinehurst on Monday.

McCanless Couples:
Braving the mid-90 degree heat, the team of Terrol Kendall, Susan and JJ Wydner emerged the winners over the team of Walt Kincaid, Mary and Gene Seaford.
Bev Cobb brought home the money by winning longest putt and closest to the pin.
Soccer academy
The Catawba College Soccer Youth Academy will held July 13 from 6:30-8 p.m. and July 15 from 9-10:30 a.m.
The academy is for ages 7-12.

Minor leagues
The Chicago White Sox named Kannapolis Intimidators right field Micker Adolfo the organization’s Minor League Player of the Month for June.
Adolfo, who was also named the Sox Minor League Player of the Month in May, batted .267/.339/.923 with eight home runs, eight doubles, and 20 RBIs over 26 games in June.

The Intimidators continued a skid with a 5-2 loss to Delmarva on Monday.
Delmarva broke a 2-all tie in the fourth.
The Intimidators are at Hickory tonight.

Colton Laws (Carson) was credited with his first pro win on Sunday after throwing two scoreless innings for Bluefield.
South camp
Lady Raider Softball Camp will be held July 24-27. Camp is for grades 1-9 and will be held daily from 9 until noon.
The camp will be led by South Rowan High head coach Dean Mullinax.
