Area Sports Briefs: Legion playoffs start tonight (Junior and Senior)

East Rowan and West Rowan finished 1-2 in the Mid-Area Division of Area III and start the Junior Legion baseball playoffs tonight.
East (20-0) will play at home at Staton Field at 7 p.m., with Stokes County expected to provide the opposition.
West Rowan will be on the road against West Forsyth Blue tonight. West Rowan will be at home on Sunday for Game 2 at 7 p.m.

Rowan County awaits the winner of the Kannapolis/Winston-Salem series.
Rowan will start playoff action on July 4 at Newman Park. The second round is best-of-five.
Randolph County, the Northern Division champ, and Eastern Randolph, the Northern Division runner-up, also received first-round byes.
Second place in the Southern Division between Concord and Stanly, both 5-5, went to the third tiebreaker, fewest runs allowed in division play. Concord had the edge, 88-73.
Kannapolis won the tiebreaker for fifth with Mooresville by virtue of the second tiebreaker. Kannapolis got the nod by splitting with second-place Concord. Mooresville was swept by Concord.
Intimidators
Mitch Roman homered and Grant Massey drove in two in a three-run first inning, but the Intimidators surrendered the lead and fell to the Delmarva Shorebirds, 6-4, on Friday night at Intimidators Stadium.
Kannapolis suffered its fourth consecutive loss.
Kannapolis hosts Delmarva again tonight. Gates open at 6 p.m.
Tonight’s game features postgame fireworks set to patriotic music.

Monster trucks
Sparks will fly as the metal-mashing machines of the Circle K Back-to-School Monster Truck Bash return to The Dirt Track at Charlotte for a night of high-flying action on the most diabolical outdoor course on the planet.
Fans can come early to grab a photo beside the massive five-ton machines, meet the drivers who power the 2,000-horsepower beasts and enjoy all the pre-race festivities at The Dirt Track.
The action starts at 6 p.m. on August 19. Adult tickets are $27, but children under the age of 13 are only $11. Tickets can be purchased at www.charlottemotorspeedway.com.
East Diamond Sports
East Rowan Diamond Sports 11U All-Star team repeated as Cal Ripken Western N.C. state champions on Wednesday in Lexington.
Eight members of the 11U team were part of last year’s 10U state championship team.
The team went 5-0 in the tournament and outscored opponents from Charlotte, Mooresville, North Surry and Winston Salem, 75-5.
The team will represent N.C. in the Southeast Regional held in Longwood, Fla., on July 18th-23.
