Golf carts take a ride to ‘Music at the Mural’

SALISBURY — In the end, only four golf carts participated in the first-ever caravan to the Music at the Mural concert Saturday evening, but the participants showed plenty of enthusiasm.

“It was a lot of fun and, hopefully, more will be in it next time,” said Lora Owen, who took pictures of the golf cart procession through town.

Salisbury police officers provided an escort. Participants traveled from Morgan Ridge Railwalk Brewery & Eatery to Saturday’s free concert on West Fisher Street next to the giant, turn-of-the-century themed mural. Police also provided an escort for the return trip after the concert.

Among the participants were Linda and Derby Holshouser, whose golf cart was decorated to the hilt for summer. The fake old people in the back of their cart were named Myrtle and Barney. Linda dresses Myrtle and Barney for all kinds of holidays at her house off N.C. 150, but this time they took a road trip.

Also traveling with the Holshousers was their dog, Tucker, who didn’t seem to mind all the bubbles coming from the golf cart.

Mikey Wetzel, owner of Go Burrito! restaurant, had the idea for a golf cart caravan to Music at the Mural as a way of giving the concert a beach community kind of feel.

“We managed to get four carts out there, which is an OK start, considering it down-poured beforehand and scared most of my carters away,” Wetzel said. “As long as the weather doesn’t, ahem, ‘rain on our parade,’ then we should have good turnouts for next time.”

The summer promises three more Music at the Mural concerts: July 29, Aug. 25 and Sept. 30.
