Area Sports Briefs: Tie in SAL All-Star Game

The rain-shortened South Atlantic League All-Star Game ended in a 3-all tie on Tuesday in Columbia.

The game was called because of rain and wet field conditions in the top of the eighth.

The Toronto Blue Jays announced the signing of seventh-round pick Colton Laws (Carson).

The Oakland Athletics announced the signing of North Davidson outfielder  Austin Beck, a first-round pick.

Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) had a rough outing on Sunday for Charlotte, allowing five earned runs in one inning vs. Indianapolis.

Parnell had three solid outings before that one, but his ERA jumped to 9.00 since joining the Knights.

Jerry Sands (Catawba) hasn’t homered in 14 games for Double-A Richmond, although he does have eight doubles.

Sands is batting .278 with six RBIs.

Reliever Craig Brooks (Catawba) had had mixed results since being promoted to the Double-A Tennessee Smokies. Brooks has struck out 10 in 10 innings, but he’s walked 11 while allowing eight earned runs. He’s 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA for the Smokies since his promotion from Myrtle Beach.

After pitching in two games for the Houston Astros,  Jordan Jankowski (Catawba)  returned to Triple-A Fresno.

He has a 3.42 ERA for Fresno and has saved six games this season.

Will Albertson (Catawba)  is on the disabled list at Augusta in the Class-A South Atlantic League.

Albertson is batting .224 with a homer and six RBIs in 67 at-bats.

Wood bat leagues

Chance Bowden (Salisbury, Catawba) had three hits for the Coastal Plain League’s Gastonia Grizzlies on Monday to raise  his batting average to .222.

Luke Setzer (East Rowna, Catawba) is batting .300 with 11 RBIs for the Grizzlies.

Jeremy Simpson (West Rowan, Catawba) is batting .302 for the Coastal Plain League’s Asheboro Copperheads.

Connor Johnson (East Rowan, Catawba) started in the Northwoods League on Tuesday and struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings. He  allowed two earned runs in a no-decision.

Local golf

Kelly Howard made a hole-in-one on Sunday at McCanless.  Howard aced the 145-yard No. 3 hole with a 9-iron.

He was playing in the weekly “McCanless Sunday Couples” with Walt Kincaid, Sharon Lee and Roxy, the boxer (his swing coach).

Fifty-two GARS members played in foursomes at Warrior.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Winsten Mahaffey with a net of 61.40.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was J.C. Ritchie with a net of 66.60.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Frank Masingo with a net of 62.42.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was John Cress with a net of 61.44.

Low gross score was Larry Petrea with a 69.

Mick Rowell, 71, shot a 71; Winsten Mahaffey, 80, shot a 70; Frank Masingo, 81, shot an 81; Buddy Barger, 83, shot a 77; Lou Manning, 83, shot an 81; O.J. Chandler, 87, shot an 86; and J.C. Ritchie, 92, shot an 82.
