Area Sports Briefs: Giants sign former Catawba slugger

Jerry Sands (Catawba), who was playing with the independent Somerset Patriots, has been signed by the San Francisco Giants.

Sands was assigned to Double-A Richmond by the Giants and doubled in his debut for the Flying Squirrels on Saturday night.

Sands batted .319 for Somerset with 13 homers and 45 RBIs in 39 games.

Qualifying for the 15th annual Rowan Masters is set for June 17 at Warrior Golf Club.

Entry fee is $30 for members and $60 for non-members.

Qualifying is by 18-hole stroke play, with the top 31 advancing to match play along with defending champ Andrew Purcell.

Match play is June 23-25.

East basketball camp

East Rowan Basketball Skills Camp for rising 2nd-5th grade boys and girls will be held June 15-16. The cost is $40.

Camp for boys and girls grade 6-9 will be held June 19-21. Cost is $60.

Carson middle blocker Lindsay Elmore has committed to Queens’ volleyball program.

Elmore had 243 kills, 104 blocks, 70 digs and 40 aces for Carson last season.

Jackson Raper (Catawba) had four hits for the Lake Norman Copperheads of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League on Friday.

Prep softball

RALEIGH  — North Stanly captured its first fast-pitch state championship, hanging on to beat Whiteville 4-2, in an 11-inning thriller in Game 3 of the series on Saturday.

Merris Talbert went 11 innings for the Comets, hurling eight strikeouts while allowing  two runs, two walks and seven hits.

MVP Alexa Sells hit a two-run homer for the Comets.

A.L. Brown’s Scott Rodgers was named MECKA Coach of the Year.

A.L. Brown’s Allie Baker is the MECKA Player of the Year.

A.L. Brown’s Ashlynn Stokes, Brandin Blackmon, Savanna Hagler, Harlie Taylor and Kelly Chrismon made all-conference.

Davie’s Olivia Boger was named Central Piedmont Conference Pitcher of the Year.

Jessie Beck, Anna Devereaux, Sierra Ferguson, K’Lea Parks, Kenzie Smith and Bridgett Tierney made all-conference.

North Davidson’s Mike Lambros was named CPC Coach of the Year.

West Forsyth’s Anna Epling is the CPC Player of the Year.

North Davidson finished a two-game sweep of Cape Fear for the 4A state championship  with a 3-2  win on Saturday.

The win gave  Lambros and the Black Knights an emotional championship.

Katie McNeill, Lexi Bryant and Syndey Snyder had RBIs. Spencer was named MVP.

Prep baseball

ZEBULON — Northern Guilford’s Logan King tripled home a run in the second inning and scored on a groundout. NG  held on to beat Crest, 2-1, for the 3A state championship.

A.L. Brown golf coach Jim Newell and A.L. Brown tennis coach  Jamie Bruckmann are MECKA coaches of the year.

A.L. Brown sophomore Joshua Parks was named MECKA Male Athlete of the Year for boys track.

Baseball  Camp June 12-15 at Salisbury High baseball field. For ages 8-14. Cost is $30.

Instructors: Salisbury High head coach Mike Herndon and SHS baseball team.

Participants need to bring their own baseball gear and water. Scholarships are available.

Days: Monday-Thursday, 9 until noon.

Fast-Pitch Softball Camp for ages 8-14 on June 12-15 at Salisbury Community Park. Cost is $30.

Instructor: Ericka Nesbitt – former East Rowan High and Campbell University star, West Rowan assistant coach.

This  camp will include pitching, hitting, fielding and base running. Campers will participate in skill development sessions and live game situations.

Participants will need to bring their own softball gear and water. Scholarships available.
