75-year Corriher Grange members honored

Corriher Grange honored two members with their 75 year recognition from the National Grange on May 6. The National Grange is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. The Grange is a grassroots, community service, family organization with a special interest in agriculture. The foundation of the organization is the Community Grange, which can be found in rural, suburban and urban communities across the country. Corriher Grange provides the opportunity, the people provide leadership and the community reaps the benefits.

Participating in there ceremony were President David Allen along with Shelby Karriker. Jimmy Gentry, NC Grange President, presented the 75-year member recognitions to Kenneth Corriher and Philip Sloop.

Both gentlemen remain active in the community. Family members were present to celebrate this honor. Paul Campbell received 70-year recognition.

Several members were recognized in April: Hoke Karriker-70 years and 50-year members Lenora and Clement Bost and Jerry Karriker. Jo and Henry Starnes were recognized as 50-year members, but unable to attend the meeting.

Doug Patterson, VP of Patterson Farm, and President of the NC Strawberry Growers Association told the story of their family farming business. Doug spoke about strawberries, as well as tomatoes, the petting zoo and school field trips. He addressed concerns of all fruit and vegetable farmers –the weather, changing business trends, and labor issues.

Keller recognized by VA for service

Margaret Keller of Granite Quarry received a Certificate of Appreciation from VA Hospital Administrator Kaye Green, at the Volunteer Luncheon held in April and sponsored by the VA Volunteer Services.

Keller was honored for her 37 years of volunteer work at the VA. She is a member of DAVA Unit 76 (Disabled Americans having served in Viet Nam).

Strawberries are ripe and ready for eating. Don’t miss the annual strawberry festival at Spencer Presbyterian Church Sunday, May 21 from 1-3 p.m. in the fellowship hall and on the grounds. Assorted strawberry desserts will be served at no charge. Entertainment includes performances by Elvis impersonator Michael Thomas; gymnast Rylan Furr; vocalists Quincy Cook, Mallory Braun, Alexis Cowan, North Rowan Middle School “Newest Edition;” NRHS band members; and other local performers. The church is located on 1st Street in Spencer across from the entrance to the NC Transportation Museum.

 

Davie County Democratic party officers

At the annual Davie County Democratic Party Convention in April, delegates elected new officers for 2017-2019. These officers, along with precinct chairs will lead the party through the midterm election. The next county meeting will be June 13, at 7 p.m. All Democrats and unaffiliated voters are invited. The District Convention is Saturday, May 20 at Lexington Senior High School, 26 Penry St. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Training sessions start at 10 a.m. Key note speaker will be Chaz Beasley, District 92 NC House Representative.

 

Bennett Place hosts Memorial Day Military Timeline

DURHAM — Memorial Day is a time to remember the sacrifice that so many men and women have made for the freedoms we treasure. America has a rich history of selfless acts of bravery and sacrifice beginning with the American Revolution and continuing to the present day.

Visit Bennett Place and join military living historians representing the American soldier of various time periods throughout our nation’s history on Saturday May 27 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday May 28 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Citywide revival event

Interdenominational Ministers Fellowship of Rowan presents a citywide revival on May 22-26 at 7 p.m. nightly

The Monday-Thursday workshops include a health and wellness fair by the Rowan County Health Department; Ticora Davis on how to start a business plus an information table on “better jobs for better lives in Rowan County” and Pastor Anthony Smith will speak.

Nightly music by City Wide Choir and Liturgical Dance plus Friday is Youth Night; churches are invited to bring their youth out for a cookout, music and fellowship.
