Prep Track: Two more state titles for Payton Russell

North Rowan senior Payton Russell won two more state championships on the Irwin Belk Track at North Carolina A&T on Friday.

Russell won the 200 with a clocking of 25.14 seconds and took the 400 in 56.15.

Russell was running on the same track where she’ll compete in college for the Aggies.

Russell finished her high school career with six outdoor state titles and seven state titles overall. She’s won the 400 three times and the 200 twice. She was part of a 4×400 relay state champ, and she won a 300-meter championship indoors.

North senior Chevy Blaire took fourth in the shot put (36 feet, 5.5 inches) and sixth in the discus (110-8).

North’s Lakayla Birst was ninth in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 10 inches.

North’s girls placed sixth with 28 points. High Point Andrews won with 90.

North Rowan’s Daylnn Cuthbertson placed eighth in the boys triple jump with an effort of 42 feet.

In Friday’s 4A State Championships at North Carolina A&T, A.L. Brown’s Joshua Parks took sixth place in the 400 (49.31) and eighth in the high jump (6-2).

Brandon Hernandez was 11th in the 1600 (4:30.51) and 3200 (9:48).

In Saturday’s 3A State Championships at North Carolina A&T, West Rowan’s Cameron Butler took third in the 800 meters in 1:57.25. West’s Andrew Burgess was fourth in 1:57.98.

West freshman Jalen Houston took fourth in the 100 hurdles in 14.92 seconds.

Carson’s Brenden Westbrook placed fifth in the long jump with an effort of 21.25 feet.

South Rowan’s Tristan Gabriel cleared 13 feet, 6 inches for eighth place in the pole vault. East Rowan’s Lee Sharum placed 10th in the pole vault at 13 feet.

Carson’s William Fuller was first in the wheelchair discus (23 feet, 8 inches) and 100 meters (34.43 seconds). He was second in the shot put (9-5.25).

Carson’s McKenzie Gadson placed fifth in the 200 meters in 25.54 seconds. Gadson ran 12.67 in the 100 in the prelim but just missed advancing to the final.
