SALISBURY — Jabe Fisher has always enjoyed cooking, but only recently did he realize it was a possible career option. The 23-year-old Salisbury native is a second-semester freshman at Livingstone College where he’s enrolled in the culinary arts and hospitality management program.

“I’ve always loved cooking,” he said, but he hadn’t been aware of the professional opportunities it could offer.

This summer, Fisher has a chance to attend Shanghai Second Polytechnic University in China with the Livingstone culinary program. He’ll attend with seven other students for six weeks to expand his knowledge of culinary arts and learn more about Chinese culture.

“Livingstone has given me the opportunity to go on this trip,” he said.

Fisher created a Go Fund Me page in hopes of garnering monetary support for the trip. “The school has required me to raise donations so I will be able to attend the trip and broaden my culinary horizons,” he said on the page.

His goal is to raise $3,500, which would cover any vaccines, plane tickets and the cost for the  Shanghai university.

“It would help out with my future and my career as a chef. I’ll get to learn what they have to offer on the other side of the world,” Fisher said.

He hopes this will lead him to a career as a personal chef.

Fisher is an East Rowan High graduate.
