Area Sports Briefs: State golf championships start today

The NCHSAA state golf championships start today and continue on Tuesday.
Format: 36 holes, stroke play. Team championships are determined by best four scores.
Sites: 4A — Pinehurst No. 6. 3-A — Foxfire Golf & Resort (Red Fox Course), Jackson Springs. 2A — Beacon Ridge Country Club, West End.
Nick Lyerly will tee off at 9:12 a.m. to get East Rowan’s day started in the 3A Championships at Foxfire.
East has been 3A runner-up the last two seasons.
Bryson Sprinkle (9:21), Austin Miller (9:30), William Garland (9:39) and Alex Miller (9:48) will follow.
South Rowan’s Parker Chavis qualified as an invidual and tees off at 10:06 a.m.

Salisbury’s Antosek qualified as an individual for the 2A State Championships and tees off at 10 a.m. at Beacon Ridge.

Davie County’s Wesley Sink will be on the tee at 7:30 a.m. in the 4A State Championships at Pinehurst No. 6.
College baseball
Montreat’s Ross Hoffner (Davie County) was recognized as a member of the Champions of Character team and earned All-Academic team recognition.
Local golf
McCanless Couples:
The team of Harry Owen, Terrol Kendall, Mary Seaford and Susan Wydner emerged as the victors on Sunday, edging the team of Azalee Story, David Huneycutt, Walt Kincaid and Alex Shafer. Hary Owen had the longest putt.
Intimidators
Micker Adolfo extended his hitting streak to 10 games, but Kannapolis lost to Asheville, 4-1, Sunday.
