Area Sports Briefs: SAC baseball tourney schedule set

Catawba’s baseball team will play on Friday at noon in first round of South Atlantic Conference Tournament in Kodak, Tenn.

Top-seeded Catawba will play the lowest seed that survives the Friday’s two play-in games —No. 6 Coker, No. 7  Carson-Newman or No. 8 Wingate.

Catawba also is scheduled to play Belmont Abbey at Newman Park on Tuesday.

 

College lacrosse

Catawba men’s lacrosse team is seeded fifth and plays at No. 4 Queens on Tuesday in the SAC tourney. Catawba’s fourth-seeded women’s team hosts No. 5 Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday.

 

College golf

In the three-day SAC Championship at the Country Club of Salisbury, most teams were able to complete the first round on Sunday. Queens, at 4-over, led the teams that completed the round. Carson-Newman was even par after 14 holes.  Catawba finished the first round, shooting 315.

Jayvee baseball

West Rowan won the jayvee baseball tournament at Mooresville. East Rowan went 2-1.

 

Prep golf

The Rowan County Golf Championships scheduled for Monday have been postponed to Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Corbin Hills.

 

Prep track and field

North Rowan’s Payton Russell plans to sign with North Carolina A&T on Wednesday.

 

College baseball

Appalachian State’s Brian Bauk (Salisbury) hit his first homer of the season on Saturday. Bauk had four hits and four RBIs as the Mountaineers swept a doubleheader against Georgia State. Matt Vernon (Davie County) had two hits in the second game.

Colton Laws (Carson) stayed undefeated for Charlotte on Friday. He pitched seven innings in a 10-2 win against Middle Tennesee. Laws struck out six and allowed two runs and seven hits.

Eric Tyler (South Rowan) had six hits and scored four runs for East Carolina as the Pirates won a weekend series against Cincinnati.

 

 

Prep softball

Jessica Beck drove in two runs and Olivia Boger struck out eight as Davie softball won 9-2 against Reagan on Saturday.

Second-place Davie takes on Central Piedmont Conference leader North Davidson on Wednesday.

 

West Junior Legion

West Rowan Junior Legion is holding baseball sign-ups tonight (April 24) at 7 p.m. in the school media center.

Junior Legion baseball is for players born on Jan.  1, 2000, or later.

College track

Livingstone athletes won two events at Saturday’s CIAA Outdoor Championships in Bowie, Md. Kelvin Johnson took the men’s shot put, while Asia Green won the women’s javelin.

Minor leagues

Craig Brooks (Catawba) got  his first win of the season for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Sunday. Brooks has been outstanding (0.77 ERA) all season. He struck out four in two scoreless innings on Sunday.

The Kannapolis Intimidators were washed out on Sunday and start a series Monday at Hagerstown.

Brandon Ford (North Rowan) is a starting receiver for the Upstate Dragons, based in Greenville, S.C.
