Area Sports Briefs: Intimidators clinch series

Dane Dunning spun six scoreless innings, and the Kannapolis Intimidators used a ninth-inning rally to pull away from the Tourists for a 6-1 win on Tuesday night at McCormick Field.

Kannapolis (5-8) secured the series and will play for a sweep tonight.

College track

Western Carolina’s Devaniel Dale (East Rowan) ran on the winning 4×400 team in Saturdays track meet hosted by the Catamounts. WCU’s Josh Little (East Rowan) ran on the winnng 4×100 team.

College baseball

Charlotte’s Colton Laws  (Carson) ranks third in Conference USA with a 1.16 ERA.

East Carolina’s Eric Tyler (South Rowan) is batting .349, fifth in the American Athletic Conference and is fourth in hits.

Matt Honeycutt (South Rowan) is batting .320 with five homers and 32 RBIs for Mars Hill. Honeycutt is second on the team in RBIs.

Matt Vernon (Davie) is batting .309 with four homers and 19 RBIs for Appalachian State.

College golf

East Carolina’s Logan Shuping (East Rowan) shot  77-76-75 — 228 at The Maxwell in Oklahoma.

Isabella Rusher (Salisbury) shot 77-79-81 — 237 for Richmond’s women’s golf team in the Hoya Invitational.

College tennis

N.C. State’s Michael Ogden (Salisbury) has won 14 singles matches and 15 doubles matches. He went 4-1 at No. 1 doubles against some heavyweight teams in recent matches.

College softball

Sydney Poole (East Rowan) got another win for Pfeiffer’s highly ranked program with six strong innings against Erskine on  Tuesday.

Poole is 12-0.

Kaleigh Troutman (East Rowan) has hit three h omres for the Falcons.

Catawba’s softball lost at Wingate, 2-0 and 5-4, on Tuesday.

Katherine Shumaker hit a three-run homer as the Indians tried to come back in the nightcap.

Catawba ends its season on Saturday, hosting Tusculum for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Prep baseball

In the East Rowan Spring Break Classic, James Fierra had three RBIs and Hunter Dula pitched a complete game in a 5-4 win against the Charlotte Stampede on Tuesday.

West Iredell pulled out a 2-1 win against Central Cabarrus in East’s tournament on Tuesday.

Nick Ward pitched a complete game for West Iredell.

Jessi Woolard had two hits for Central. Cameron Kepley struck out nine before reaching the pitch-count limit in the sixth.

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions defeated Forest Hills, 6-1, on Tuesday and went 2-1 in the   East Rowan Spring Break Classic.

Jeremy Whitehead, Thaddaeus Lankford and Weston Cregger had doubles.

AJ Knight and Clay Pinion combined on a five-hitter, with Knight getting the win.

The Stallions (20-7)  will play at Lake Norman Charter on Friday.

Pro football

K.P. Parks (West Rowan) scored touchdowns in his first two exhibition games in Germany.
