Area Sports Briefs: Catawba bats quiet at Mars Hill

Mars Hill scored three runs on just four hits and topped visiting Catawba 3-1 in SAC baseball action on Saturday at Henderson Field. The Lions are 23-17 overall and 9-7 in the SAC, while the 29th-ranked Indians fell to 25-11 and 11-5.
Chance Bowden singled home Luke Setzer with two outs in the first for Catawba’s run. Russ Weiker allowed just three hits but fell to 2-3.
The teams play a doubleheader today at 1 p.m.
College softball
Katherine Shumaker hit a two-run homer with Taylor Martin on base, but Catawba’s softball team lost to Mars Hill 8-0 and 8-2 on Saturday.
Prep track and field
In a six-team track meet at East Rowan, Hickory Ridge’s boys won with 160 points. Next were Concord (107), West Rowan (89), East Rowan (80), Carson (75) and South Rowan (41).
Carson’s Brenden Westbrook won the triple jump (45 feet, 1 inch), long jump (22-7) and 400 (53.0 seconds).
South Rowan got a first from Tristan Gabriel in the pole vault (12-6).
West Rowan got wins from Cameron Butler in the 800 (2:07.46); Javon Lofton in the shot put (43-2.5); Nathan Zauner in the 3200 (10:37), and Andrew Burgess in the 1600 (4:49).
West’s Butler, Burgess, Thomas Waldo and Matthew Ramsay took the 4×800 in 8:52.

In the girls meet, Hickory Ridge won with 141 points. Next were East Rowan (105), Carson (96), Concord (83), South Rowan (72) and West Rowan (44).
Carson’s McKenzie Gadson won the 200 (27.43), while Maddie Pait won the high jump (4-10).
South’s Savannah Stitt won the pole vault (6-6). South’s Madison Lowery, Bailee Elliott, Belen Fierro and Madilyn Jones won the 4×800 in 11:05.
West’s Destiny Shaver won the 300 hurdles (52.10), while Deja Phillips won the 400 (1:01.69).
East got firsts from Iyahnna Neal in the discus (101-2); Faith Faller in the 3200 (12:42), and Katelyn Sprinkle in the 100 hurdles (17.27).
Minor leagues
Former Catawba star Craig Brooks, playing in Advanced A ball in the Chicago Cubs farm system, got off to a good start in his first relief outing for Myrtle Beach on Friday.
Brooks pitched two scoreless innings in a 2-1 win against Lynchburg. He allowed one hit, walked one and struck out three.

Whit Merrifield (Davie County) had a homer and a steal for Omaha in an 8-7 Triple A loss to Colorado Springs on Friday.

With Lakewood down to its final strike, Cord Sandberg hit a solo homer to right-center to tie the game, and Lakewood scored four more in the 10th to edge the Intimidators, 8-4, in extras on Saturday night.
Dane Dunning of Kannapolis finished six innings with four hits and one run allowed. Dunning recorded eight strikeouts, did not walk a batter, and finished by retiring the last 10 batters he faced.
The Intimidators (0-3) will host Lakewood again today, with first pitch at 5:05 p.m.
