Area Sports Briefs: South wins SPC golf match

In South Piedmont Conference golf at Skybook on Wednesday, South Rowan won with a score of 157.
Andrew Coward shot 37 to lead the Raiders. Other South scorers were Parker Chavis (39), Landon Johnson (39) and Andrew Hubbard (42).
East Rowan shot 164 for second place.
Medalist Nick Lyerly led the Mustangs with a 36. Other scorers were Will Garland (41), Alex Miller (43) and Bryson Sprinkle (44).
Other top scores were 38s turned in by Concord’s Stephen Carroll and Hickory Ridge’s Alex Hefner .
Carson’s Patrick Street shot 41, while teammate Zain Tucker shot 43.
Davis Tadlock shot 46 to lead West Rowan.
Concord was third in team scoring at 166.
Prep baseball
East Rowan pounded Hickory Ridge, 18-2, on Wednesday for a South Piedmont Conference baseball victory.
East (4-3, 3-1 SPC) took full advantage of 15 walks and four hit batsmen.
John Owen pitched three innings and Colby Myrick hurled two in the five-inning contest.
Nathan Hill had two hits, including a triple, and Hayden Setzer doubled for the Mustangs.

First-place A.L. Brown outlasted North Meck, 4-2, in 10 innings for a MECKA win on Wednesday.
Dylan Shubert homered for the Wonders. Ryan O’Kelly had a two-run double.
Shubert, O’Kelly and Robby Clarke had two hits each.
The Wonders out-hit North Meck, 9-2.
A.L. Brown pitchers Drake Vernon and Jacob Tuttle combined for 14 strikeouts.
Legion baseball
The dates for the Junior state tournament for American Legion have been moved up to July 14-18.
Mocksville is the host team.
Prep softball
East Rowan lost at Hickory Ridge, 13-3, in SPC softball played on Wednesday.
Coryn Soul drove in two runs for East. The Mustangs had six hits.
Hickory Ridge pitcher Breezy Yelton struck out six. Lindsey Powell drove in five runs. Kaitlyn Macon had three of the Bulls’ 16 hits.
College softball
Pfeiffer moved up to No. 14 in the Division II poll.
Pfeiffer has won six straight.
Freshman Makenzie Pennell leads Conference Carolinas in RBIs and ranks fourth in the league in batting average.
Vada Blue Sherrill paces the league with 17 stolen bases and Caitlin Christian is the league-leader in saves and second in strikeouts.
Pfeiffer has a six-game home slate over the rest of the week, all conference action.
Women’s hoops
Catawba junior center Terri Rogers has been named to the all-region team.
Rogers was a second team pick.
She led Catawba in scoring (18.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.8) while shooting 51.1 percent from the field.
Women’s lacrosse
Nicolette Salay scored a late game-winner in overtime, as Catawba topped Pfeiffer on Tuesday, 12-11.
SAC Player of the Week Kirstyn Kruse and Gianna Pezzulo each scored three goals for Catawba, with Kruse adding two assists.
Middle school golf
The Sacred Heart middle school shot 182 and won a four-team match at Warrior.
Leading Sacred Heart were Nick Antosek (43), Ben Childress (44) and Luke Graeber (47).
Salisbury Academy finished second at 183. Medalist Charlie Barr shot 39 for the Jaguars. Will Fowler shot 44, while Harrison McCall shot 46.
Ethan Scarborough shot 44 to lead Southeast (208).
Concordia shot 193.
Basketball clinics
Weekly basketball clinics will be held at Salisbury Academy on Sundays.
2-3 p.m. — Beginner coed for 1st-4th grades
3-4 p.m. — Intermediate coed for 5th-8th grades
4-5 p.m. — Intermediate and Elite coed Open Gym
5-6 p.m. — Elite coed for 9th-12th grades
