Area Sports Briefs: Sherrill region player of the year

Augusta men’s basketball senior guard Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) has been voted the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association Southeast Region Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.
Sherrill claimed the region’s top honor for the first time. He was joined on the All-Region first team by Carson-Newman’s Charles Clark, Lincoln-Memorial’s Luquon Choice, Montevallo’s Javonte Douglas, and Pfeiffer’s A.J. Clark
With the first-team selection, all five players are automatically eligible for Daktronics All-American honors.
The 5-9 senior guard from Cleveland, N.C., was also named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year and owns the all-time scoring title in conference history with 2,333 points.

Queens eliminated Augusta from the Southeast Regional on Sunday with an 88-82 win. Lincoln Memorial knocked out Limestone, 70-64.
Queens and Lincoln Memorial will play for the regional championship tonight at Queens at 7 p.m.

College swimming
Queens won its third straight D-II national championship in women’s swimming over the weekend.
McKenzie Stevens (Salisbury) finished third in the 200 butterfly and 200 freestyle. She swam on the second-place 800 freestyle relay team and the third-place 400 freestyle relay team.

College softball
Sydney Poole (East Rowan) was the winning pitcher with three innings of relief, and Kaleigh Troutman (East Rowan) in 15th-ranked Pfeiffer’s 5-3 win against Coker.

College baseball
Malachi Hanes hit a grand slam to lead Catawba to an 8-4 win against St. Thomas Aquinas on Sunday at Newman Park.
Freshman Bryan Ketchie (4-1) got the win for the 22nd-ranked Indians (16-7).
Jeremy Simpson (West Rowan) and Hunter Shepherd (Cabarrus Stallions) had three hits each.
Catawba’s bullpen was good in the seventh, eighth and ninth. Bryan Blanton closed it.
Catawba is scheduled to play at home today against Belmont Abbey at 5 p.m.

St. Andrews freshman Lee Poteat (West Rowan) leads the Knights in doubles, triples and hits. He has an on-base percentage of .500. Poteat has 31 RBIs in 28 games.

Michael Pinkston (West Rowan) had two RBIs for Guilford in a Sunday sweep of Muhlenberg.

In his season debut, Harrison Bell (East Rowan) pitched a scoreless inning for Charleston and struck out two.

College tennis
Christopher Newport’s Alexandra Drye (Salisbury) won three times in singles as the Captains took three of four on a road trip to California.

College golf
George Mason’s Eric Edwards (Salisbury) shot 72-71-66 (7-under) and tied for 12th in the Seminole Intercollegiate.

Richmond’s Isabella Rusher (Salisbury) shot 75-70-80 (9-over) and tied for 17th in the River Landing Classic in Wallace, N.C.

East Carolina’s Carley Cox (China Grove) shot 72-77-79 and tied for 29th in the River Landing Classic. ECU’s Grace Yatawara (Salisbury) shot 78-82-81.
