Prep Golf: Sprinkle, Lyerly sizzle for East golf

Bryson Sprinkle shot 31 and led East Rowan’s golf team to a win at McCanless on Wednesday in the first SPC match of the season.
Nick Lyerly shot 33 for the Mustangs. Will Gardner shot 37, while Alex Miller shot 38.
South Rowan placed second, with Parker Chavis and Andrew Coward shooting 34s. Landon Johnson shot and Andrew Jackson shot 43s.
Leading fifth-place Carson were Patrick Street (37) and Zain Tucker (39).
Cody Larue’s 45 led seventh-place West.
Hickory Ridge’s Alex Hefner shot 36, while Concord’s Stephen Carroll shot 37.
Softball meeting
Salisbury Parks and Recreation will hold a coaches meeting for teams interested in playing in the Spring Men’s Open Softball League tonight at 6 p.m. at Hall Gym. Call 704-216-2709.
Prep baseball
Tyler Shepherd had three hits, including two homers, and drove in five runs to lead South Rowan to a 6-3 win against Salisbury on Wednesday in non-conference baseball.
South took a 5-1 lead with a three-run third. Shepherd was the winning pitcher. He fanned five in four innings. Walker Joyce got a save.
Chandler Lippard had three hits and two RBIs for the Hornets, and Jake Murphy had two hits.
Bo Rusher pitched three innings and took the loss for SHS.
Salisbury out-hit the Raiders, 9-6.

A.L. Brown won against visiting North Rowan, 2-0, in a non-conference game on Wednesday.
Jacob Tuttle pitched a shutout for the Wonders (4-1).
Mark Shubert and Antonio Knight drove in runs.
Joe Harrison was a hard-luck loser for the Cavaliers (1-2). He pitched a complete game and struck out 14.

Glenn won against East Rowan, 5-0, on Wednesday in Kernersville. Glenn scored a single run in five different innings.
Prep softball
Parker Greene went 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs in Tuesday’s 14-4 SPC win against Northwest Cabarrus.
Greene ended the game by the mercy rule with a two-run double.
Mary Sobataka also had two doubles for the Falcons and drove in three runs. Alexandra Linder had four hits.

Davie was held to five hits in a 10-0 loss to Forbush on Wednesday.
Prep girls soccer
South Rowan’s soccer team romped against North Rowan, 9-0, on Wednesday.
Madison Henry, Mary Jester and Raquel Landaverde scored two goals each.
Karigan Ford, Rhiannon Kimmer and Madison Amico had a goal each.
Prep basketball
The annual all-star game for Rowan County basketball seniors is set for March 25 at North Rowan.
Players need to sign up by contacting Coach Anderw Mitchell, AD Ben Hampton or Henderson Lentz.
The festivities include a dunk contest and 3-point shooting contest. The girls all-star game is at 5 p.m., while the boys all-star game is at 7:30 p.m.
Admission is $5.
College softball
Hunter Gibbons (West Rowan) is batting .316 with two homers and 13 RBIs for Western Carolina.

Logan Lowery (South Rowan) is 5-3 for N.C. Wesleyan softball. She has a 2.04 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 48 innings.

Georgia College took both games of a softball doubleheader against visiting Catawba on Wednesday afternoon at the Peeler Complex. The Bobcats won 3-1 and 9-8 to improve to 15-9 on the year.
The Catawba Indians fell to 6-21.
Georgia College got a complete game by Kayla Price (8-2) to win the opener, then rallied twice for the sweep.
The Bobcats erased a 5-1 deficit with a six-run sixth then got a winning two-out, two-run double in the seventh from Holland Coursey for a walk-off victory.
Delane Smith had three RBIs for Catawba. Monica Taylor had a two-run single. Kristen Stinnard had three hits.
Catawba is at home Saturday for a doubleheader against Southern Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
College baseball
Catawba was shut out on Wednesday, 11-0, at St. Leo.
The Lions improved to 10-6, while the Catawba Indians fell to 13-6.
Saint Leo held a 6-0 lead after two innings and capped the night on a three-run homer by Michael Mann in the fifth.
Michael Elwell gave up a lead-off home run to Lane Stancil in the first and took the loss.
Catawba never threatened off five Lion hurlers.
Catawba returns home to Newman Park on Friday, hosting Coker at 6 p.m.

College golf
Isabella Rusher (Salisbury) shot 76-78-75 — 279 in the Kiawah Classic.

East Carolina’s Carley Cox (China Grove) shot 80-74-78 — 232 for East Carolina in the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla.
College swimming
In the D-II National Championships in Birmingham, Ala., McKenzie Stevens (Salisbury) is competing in four individual events for Queens —100 free, 200 free, 1000 free and 200 butterfly.
Stevens recently was named Queens’ Intercon Student-Athlete of the Month.

College lacrosse
Visiting Bentley took an 11-5 win over Catawba in men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.
Justin Warnock scored three of Catawba’s goals. Ryan Applegate stopped 14 shots in goal.
Women’s basketball
Amy Steller (Davie) scored 28 points for Guilford in a 74-70 loss to Marymount in the first round of the D-III tournament.
Men’s basketball
Tre Williams (Carson) scored 13 points for Claflin in a 76-58 loss to Fort Valley State in the SIAC tournament. Williams averaged 9.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists.
