Area Sports Briefs: South golfers win at Irish Creek

In Monday’s Irish Creek Invitational golf tournament, East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly was medalist with a 69.

South Rowan (307) took team honors with Andrew Coward (71), Parker Chavis (72), Landon Johnson (79) and Andrew Hubbard (85) posting the top scores.

Alex Antosek shot 76 to lead Salisbury, while Hank Robins shot 83.

Patrick Street’s 77 led Carson. Zain Tucker shot 85.

East’s Bryson Sprinkle shot 79, while Will Garland shot 85.

East hosts the first SPC match of the season on Wednesday at McCanless.

College golf

Livingstone  men’s golf team shot 320 and won Monday’s Blue Bear Classic at Warrior.

Medalist  Telvin Walker, Stephen Washington and Philip Harrison placed in the top five for the Blue Bears.

Walker shot 6-over 77. Washington shot 79, while Harrison shot 80. Marcus Thompson shot 84.

Fayetteville State finished one shot back.

LC will participate in the St. Augustine’s Invitational in Raleigh this weekend.

The Blue Bears return to  Warrior  to host the CIAA Southern Divisional Championship on March 19-21.

Local golf

Kevin Lentz made a hole-in-one during the Two-Man Mulligan Tournament at Warrior.

Lentz aced the 195-yard No. 8 hole for his sixth career hole-in-one.

Lentz was playing with Jon Dyer, Barry Harbinson and Doyle Wyant.

  

MLB

Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) was invited to spring training by the Kansas City Royals as a non-roster player.

He’s pitched in three games so far and has one save. He’s allowed three runs in three innings of work.

Prep baseball

The Greater Cabarrus Stallion stayed undefeated by beating SouthLake Christian 5-2 on Monday.

Seth Cauble had two hits for the Stallions (8-0).

Clay Pinion went the distance on the mound for the Stallions.

The Stallions play at Albemarle today.

A full slate of baseball is scheduled for today with the Carson-East Rowan SPC contest at Staton Field  the biggest one.

Prep soccer

West Rowan breezed to a 9-0 win against North Rowan in a non-conference match played on Monday.

Lejla Mehmedovic scored three goals and had two assists. MacKenna Clifton also scored  three goals. Chloe Patterson had a goal and two assists. Stacey Ketchie had a goal and an assist. Carly Burleyson scored  a goal.

Prep softball

In East Rowan’s 15-11 loss to West Stanly on Monday, Bree Medlin and Ashlyn Mills had three hits each. Caroline Johnson had two hits.

Prep tennis

Salisbury’s boys tennis team won against A.L. Brown, 9-0.

Ethan McGee, Roarke Burton, Jander Rodas, Sean  Archer, Adam Drye and Paul Weitz won in singles.

In doubles, winners were McGee/Drye, Burton/Archer  and Weitz/Rodas.

Salisbury will play at Carson today at 4 p.m.

7th-grade basketball tournament

Erwin’s top-seeded girls edged Knox, 26-24, on Monday to advance to the championship game.

Erwin (16-0) was led by Mary Spry with nine points, and Katelyn Griggs with seven. Hannah Isley and Madie Honeycutt scored five each.

College softball

Catawba lost twice on Sunday and fell to 6-19.

In a 6-1 loss to Barry, Taylor Martin (West Rowan) doubled and scored West’s run on an error. Martin had two of Catawba’s six hits.

In a 2-0 loss to Columbus State, Brooke Walser pitched well for the Indians and didn’t allow an earned run. She gave up two hits in six innings and struck out four.

 Martin and Delane Smith had Catawba’s only hits. 

Catawba will travel to Georgia College for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
