East Rowan’s baseball team won at Cox Mill, 2-1, in their South Piedmont Conference opener on Friday.

The Mustangs (2-1, 1-0) scored twice in the first inning on Nathan Hill’s sac fly and a successful double steal.

Pitchers Hayden Setzer, who threw five innings for the win, and John Owen, who hurled the last two for a save, made the lead stand up.

Cavaliers win

North Rowan’s baseball team got its first win under new coach Tommy Small, outscoring Statesville, 10-9, in a back-and-forth non-conference game.

Mark Parra got the win. Corbin Smith earned  a save.

Henderson Lentz had two triples to pace North’s offense. Jordan Goodine had a double to key a five-run sixth that turned the game in the Cavs’ favor.

North is 1-1.

Statesville got a big offensive night from Bryant  Young, but fell to 0-3.

West falls in opener

West Rowan’s baseball team started at Robinson with two quick runs in the first inning, but that was it.

The Falcons lost to the Bulldogs, 3-2, in South Piedmont Conference play on Friday. Robinson (1-1, 1-0) managed to win despite getting only two hits.

Brandon Walton drove in a run for the Falcons (0-1, 0-1). Brett Graham had a hit and three walks.

Starter Daniel Durham pitched into the fifth inning for the Falcons and took the loss. Robinson got its three runs in the fourth.

Durham and Olen Stamper fanned four Bulldogs apiece.

Carson loses at CC

Carson’s baseball team lost at Central Central Cabarrus, 5-3, on Friday in the SPC opener for both squads.

Cameron Kepley had three hits and struck out 11 Cougars.  Jake Rowden had two RBIs.

Cole Hales and Ben Shoaf knocked in runs for Carson.

Maddux Holshouser settled down after a tough start and pitched into the sixth inning for the Cougars (1-2, 0-1) and took the loss. He struck out seven.

SPC baseball

John-Riley Hathcock pitched a no-hitter as Hickory Ridge romped against Concord, 11-0, in SPC play on Friday.

Stallions baseball

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions defeated Davie County, 9-5, on Friday.

AJ Knight had 4 hits and five RBIs.  Camron Wallace had four hits. Dalton Lankford had three hits.  Seth Cauble and McConner Wallace had two hits each.

Cauble pitched six innings and allowed three runs and three hits.

Trent Berry pitched the seventh for the Stallions (5-0).

Chris Reynolds and Beau Byerly led Davie at the plate.

The Stallions play a noon doubleheader today    against Smoky Mountain

  

Prep football

A.L. Brown linebacker Steven Howie and DB  Cinsere Allison will play in this summer’s East-West All-Star Game.

A.L. Brown punter Kevon Jacobs is headed to Winston-Salem State, while running back E.J. Henderson will play at Jireh Prep in Matthews.

Prep softball

Mataya Reynolds and Whitley Arnott had a strong pitching performance as South Rowan rolled to a 13-2 win against Northwest Cabarrus in SPC action on Friday.

West Rowan scored seven runs in the second inning and romped at Robinson, 15-3, on Friday in SPC play.

Mary Sobataka hit two homers for the Falcons.

Hannah Roberts got the win for the Falcons. Alex Linder and Parker Greene also had good games at the plate.

Madison Crowe homered for the Bulldogs.

Desiree Lewis smacked two homers to lead Davie County to a 17-7 win against Lake Norman. K’lea Parks knocked in four runs. while Anna Devereaux drove in three. Sierra Ferguson scored four runs.

Cox Mill’s Madison Michael struck out five and held East Rowan to five hits in a 9-1 win by the Chargers on Friday. Paysia Reed had three hits for Cox Mill.

Jayvee softball

East Rowan won against Cox Mill, 15-5.

Trinity won against Salisbury, 14-4, on Friday.

Tyler Thompson struck out 10 batters, and Carson held on to beat Central Cabarrus, 6-5, on Friday.

Andrew Bradshaw, Joey Pacini and Michael Bostian led the offense for Carson.

West Rowna lost ot Robinson, 9-1, on Friday. Zack Brawley had two hits for the Falcons.

South Rowan lost to Northwest Cabarrus on Friday in SPC play, 3-1.

Freshman Madison Henry scored for the Raiders.

College baseball

Colton Laws (Carson) pitched seven strong innings for Charlotte in Friday’s 2-1 win against Xavier.

Laws struck out eight while allowing four hits and no walks.

Women’s basketball

No. 2 seed King edged top-seeded Limestone 78-77 in the championship game of the Conference Carolinas Tournament.

Ashley Albertson led five King players in double figures with 18 points.

Keidra Smith scored 25 for the Saints.

Seventh-seeded Catawba plays a SAC semifinal at 2:30 p.m. today against No. 3 seed Wingate in Greenville, S.C.

Prep golf

Salisbury’s Alex Antosek was medalist in a recent match against Davie County at Oak Valley Golf Club in Advance.

Antosek shot a 36 for the nine-hole match won by the War Eagles. Salisbury freshman Hank Robins followed with a 38.
