Area Sports Briefs: West’s Weeks will play in Shrine Bowl

Published 1:23 am Monday, December 12, 2016

From staff reports
West Rowan receiver Kortez Weeks is one of the replacements for the North Carolina team for Saturday’s 80th edition of the Shrine Bowl.
Weeks, the Rowan County Offensive Player of the Year, had 67 catches for 1,307 yards and a county-record 19 touchdowns.
All the replacements — North Carolina will need eight, including two quarterbacks — will be announced today.
South Carolina also will need replacement players.
Hurricane Matthew pushed back the season a week in both Carolinas, so the Shrine Bowl now will be played on the same day as state championship games in both states.
The Shrine Bowl could not be moved back due to hotel reservations, television commitments, and so on, so the game will go on as scheduled at Gibbs Stadium on the campus of Wofford University. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
Some coaches also will have to be replaced.
