Prep Football: Mustangs score 40, but fall to Crest

Staff report

East Rowan’s football season ended with a wild, 60-40 setback at Shelby Crest in the 3A state playoffs.
East, a No. 6 seed, scored three of its six touchdowns on defense, including a 67-yard fumble return by Raequan Gibson for a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.
But Crest came back to dominate the second quarter, getting a pair of Cam Peeler to Tyshun Odom touchdown passes and outscoring the Mustangs 27-0 to take a 27-6 halftime lead.
East scored three TDs in the third quarter. Deiontae Gallman and Jake Gregory had long fumble returns for touchdowns, and Tate Houpe threw a touchdown pass to Wesley Porter.
Gregory’s TD pulled the Mustangs within 33-26, but Crest answered. Odom, who broke Crest’s single-game receiving record with 272 yards, had his third and fourth TD catches in the third quarter.
When Justin Smith threw a touchdown pass to Gibson with 6:23 remaining, East trailed 54-32, but Jamaud Geter’s pick-six with 4:33 left sealed victory for Crest (9-3). East tacked on late scores with a Smith to Sam Wall touchdown pass and Smith’s two-point conversion pass to Gibson.
