Election didn’t give Trump a mandate
This election was far from a Trump mandate. Hillary received a majority of the votes. And I contest strongly that the election was bought by trickery, voter intimidation and suppression, and outright lies, and some help from Putin. The GOP for years led efforts to bring down Hillary with such lies as the Benghazi investigation, and too many people were not smart enough to see through all of that.
Mary Forbes’ letter (“An electoral message,” Nov. 14) sounds as if all is bright ahead. Not so. Trump has already named one of the most racist persons in the world to his inside team. There is much to fear ahead.
And while Trump is now trying to say that others are spreading fear and should stop, his own words led the way vigorously.
Yes, I and many others are quite concerned about what lies ahead for millions of people who will be hurt by a Trump administration. Hatred and bigotry should never win. The media unfairly covered the GOP lies and failed to cover all of the horrible stuff in Trump’s background. I concur heartily with the first letter re the hypocrisy of the so-called evangelical un-Christians. I am ashamed and embarrassed for this nation and its people.

United Way needs you
The Rescue Squad, the Rowan County United Way and 15 other agencies that are supported by the Rowan County United Way need your support today.
The annual United Way campaign is wrapping up this week, and we’re short of our goal. The Rescue Squad responds to more than 300 motor vehicle collisions per year, averaging almost one per day, and some of those collisions are bad, resulting in people being critically injured and often resulting in death.
We’re all trying to have the proper staff on duty to immediately come to your aid. With the United Way being short of their goal yet another year, the agencies including your local Rescue Squad are facing some budget cuts. For the squad that means not having the desired funding amount available to have plenty of EMTs and rescue technicians on duty around the clock.
The emergency is real, and you can save us! Respond immediately by calling the United Way office at 704-633-1802. Remember: It is the right thing to do!

Be safe, students
Regarding the Catawba College student hit by car, hopefully she is OK. I drive by there a lot, and I see these students walk across Innes Street never looking both ways and more times than not texting or talking on their phones. They also have a responsibility when crossing Innes Street or any street around campus. Be safe, guys.

Thanks for support
Thank you to all those that voted for me for school board seat 7. It is an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to serve the community again. I will continue to work for the good of students, parents, teachers and administrators.
