Area Sports Briefs: Catawba soccer falls; Cox Mill tops Carson volleyball

Wingate, ranked No. 1 in Division II, got past host Catawba with a 2-0 victory in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at the Frock Soccer Complex.
The Bulldogs stayed unbeaten at 12-0 overall and 9-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fell to 8-5 and 5-4.
Elma N’For scored both goals for the Bulldogs with both assists coming from Jon Ander.
Catawba travels to Tusculum on Sunday to take on seventh-ranked Tusculum at 3:30 pm.

Freshman Max Fisher (Salisbury) has played in two matches in goal for Furman and has a 1-0 record.

Women’s soccer
Wingate picked up a 3-0 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Wednesday at the Frock Soccer Complex.
The Bulldogs improved to 9-4-1 overall and 7-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fell to 6-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the SAC.

Prep volleyball
Carson won the first set, but Cox Mill came back for a 22-25, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-12 win in Wednesday’s South Piedmont Conference championship match at Cox Mill.
That first set was only the third that Cox Mill has lost all season.
The undefeated Chargers are ranked first in 3A and 10th nationally.
Carson (22-5) is ranked sixth in 3A. Three of the losses have been to Cox Mill.
Seeding for the volleyball playoffs will be announced on Oct. 25 and the first three rounds will be played Oct. 26, Oct. 27 and Oct. 29.

West Davidson beat East Davidson 25-12, 24-26, 25-18 and 25-10 on Wednesday, adding the CCC tournament championship to its regular-season title.

Prep golf
Carson senior Micah Furr repeated as SPC Player of the Year for girls golf.
Hickory Ridge’s Maddie Hayes was second.
East Rowan’s Camryn Corriher finished eighth in the final standings and made the All-SPC team.
East’s Carmen Fraley finished 11th, while East’s Hailey Fesperman was 12th.
Cox Mill’s Moses Smith was named coach of the year.
Furr will compete in the 3A State Championships on Oct. 24-25 at Longwood.

College soccer
Freshman Max Fisher (Salisbury) has played in two matches in goal for Furman and has a 1-0 record.

Prep football
Erwin won, 14-8, against Southeast in seventh-grade football. Damario Chalk scored a touchdown, and Garrison Kepley threw a touchdown pass to Darren Jennings. Dominic Dale scored a PAT.

NCHSAA
Sage Surratt of Lincolnton and Natalie Lutz of Kings Mountain are the NCHSAA performers of the week.
Surratt caught seven passes for 225 yards and five touchdowns on Friday.
Lutz, a sophomore, went undefeated in tennis.
