Too many to thank for Rowan Helping Ministries

Thank you to all of the supporters of Rowan Helping Ministries that came out for the Ralph W. Ketner Center renovation rededication. It was a wonderful event and a time to show appreciation to the many volunteers and donors of the shelter.

It is always dangerous to give credit for donations because we may overlook someone. That was the case Sunday when I failed to recognize the Clarence Beaver family for their extremely generous gift of removing the solar water panels, which they had donated 25 years ago, and reconfiguring the panels and reinstalling them on the new roof, giving the shelter a gift which will be perpetual. There are too many others to list.

Let Salisbury prosper

The writer is responding to a letter in Monday’s Post, “Get rid of eyesores,” from Fred Stanback.

Thank you, Mr. Stanback. I was at that meeting. Mr. Pete Bogle and Mr. Stan Jordon presented a great presentation for that building at 201 E. Innes St. I think sometimes the Historic Salisbury Foundation goes overboard on saving buildings. For heaven’s sake, let Salisbury grow and prosper. One year is far too long to make them wait to start their project. Salisbury needs to grow now.

I was at the meeting and, believe me, it was difficult to sit there and listen. The foundation in its effort to save the old sometimes hurts people who never ask to be in a Historic District in the first place.

Is there no place for forbearance in some cases where their strict rules hurt people who are struggling to keep their families clothed and fed?

Protect our elders

Elder abuse is a serious crime in this country. In many cases, though, it goes unreported in rest homes and nursing homes. Every day a elderly person is abused or taken advantage of. In many other cultures, the elderly are respected and taken care of by their children. If you see elder abuse, report it. And for the all the young people, respect the elderly because one day we will be elderly.
