Area Sports Briefs: Richards leads Wolfpack golf

Sophomore Davis Richards (South Rowan) led N.C. State golfers in the season-opening Franklin American Mortgage Collegiate in Tennessee.
Richards shot 77-73-70 — 220 and tied for 13th.
Richards’ second-round 70 was the best round of the day.

East Carolina freshman Logan Shuping (East Rowan) shot 71-75 — 146 in the rain-shortened VCU Shootout and tied for 37th.

Catawba finished seventh at the Queens Invitational men’s golf tournament which concluded on Tuesday at the 7,099-yard, par-71 Club at Irish Creek.
Catawba had a two-round total of 614. Coker won the event by three shots over Queens with a score of 590.
Jordan Taylor had the best Catawba finish as he placed 13th, shooting rounds of 72 and 77 to finish at 149. Trey Burton rebounded from an opening 78 to card Catawba’s best score on Tuesday with a 76. He finished 22nd at 154.
Tyler Mulkey (North Rowan) shot 77-80 — 157 for the Indians and tied teammate Wes Cline for 38th.
Charlotte’s James Medley won a playoff for medalist honors.
Pfeiffer finshed sixth at 611, while Livingstone was 10th at 641.

Prep tennis
West Rowan’s girls tennis team lost, 7-2, in a non-conference match against unbeaten Davie County on Tuesday in Mount Ulla.
Davie (11-0) swept the singles courts with wins by Laura Becker, Sierra Foster, Jennifer Ngo, Amanda Ngo, Annie Kinder and Claire Myers.
West’s Payton Holt/MacKenzie Koontz and Skylar Jahnke/Amber White won in doubles.
West Rowan (6-2, 3-1 SPC) will host Central Cabarrus in a SPC match today.

Salisbury won, 9-0, against North Rowan on Tuesday for its 151st consecutive win in the CCC.
Winning for the Hornets (7-1, 5-0 CCC) in singles were Maria Capito, Bethanie Stauffer, Rachel Seifert, Rainey Dunham and Ruth Clement. Gemma Brown won by forfeit.
Capito/Dunham, Stauffer/Seifert and Clement/Ayana Peek (by forfeit) were doubles winners.
Salisbury hosts East Davidson today.

Prep volleyball
South Rowan won 20-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-23 and 15-10 against Northwest Cabarrus in SPC action on Tuesday.
Kira Rymer had 24 assists and nine digs for the Raiders. Janiya Downs had seven kills and four blocks. Carsen Carlton had seven digs. Madilyn Jones had five kills. Breanna Lentz had seven kills, six blocks, 12 digs and three aces. Hannah Lambert had nine kills, 24 digs and three aces. Jenna Strickland had 25 digs. Makayla Strickland had 16 digs, five kills and three blocks.

West Rowan lost to Robinson in a five-set match in the SPC — 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25 and 15-6.
Cox Mill swept East Rowan 25-11, 25-4 and 25-14 to stay perfect in the SPC. Carson swept Central Cabarrus. Hickory Ridge stayed in second place by sweeping Concord.

In CCC volleyball, Salisbury (4-5, 2-1 CCC) swept Thomasville 25-16, 25-19 and 25-18.
North Rowan was swept by East Davidson 25-12, 25-18, 25-23.
East Davidson and West Davidson are tied for first with 3-0 records.

Prep soccer
Salisbury and Monroe’s Central Academy (CATA) battled to a 0-0 draw on Monday.
“Losing the players that we did to graduation as well as injury, this was a good result for us,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “CATA is a battle-tested, perennial contender that has played the toughest schedule of any Western 2A team.”
Salisbury got outstanding play from Jack Fisher in goal. He secured the biggest shutout of his high school career.
Also playing well for the Hornets were Pedro Cruz, Luke Holland, Brody Dillon, Daniel Tinajero, Bryan Cortez and Angel Quintero.
The Hornets open CCC play tonight at East Davidson with games set for 5:30 (jayvees) and 7 p.m.

College tennis
Catawba opened its 2016-17 tennis season on Tuesday and split a pair of tightly contested matches with Belmont Abbey at the Johnson Tennis Center.
The Catawba women pulled out a 5-4 win, while the men dropped a 5-4 decision to the Crusaders.

Local golf
The Corbin Hills women played in a flighted low gross, low net event on Tuesday.

College football
The North Carolina A&T Aggies lost to Tulsa, 58-21, on Saturday but stayed No. 1 in the BOXTOROW Media Poll for HBCU schools.
Grambling is No. 2, with Tennessee State No. 3.

College volleyball
Catawba took its first SAC sweep of the season over the Coker Cobras on Tuesday night at Goodman Gymnasium.
Catawba (3-6, 2-3) won 25-13, 25-11 and 25-20.
Kimberly Hurtado had 10 kills and three blocks. Alex Hopper and Audrey Hoffman had nine kills each. Rachel Stanford dished out 38 assists and added eight digs.
Freshman Morgan Hester (Carson) had six digs, a kill and an ace.

Fishing
The FLW Bass Fishing League tournament season will conclude the weekend of Oct. 1-2 for NC Division anglers with a two-day Super Tournament on High Rock Lake.
Up to 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for awards up to $11,000 and $4,500.
