Area Sports Briefs: Sack for Hargrave

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Javon Hargrave (North Rowan, S.C. State) had three solo tackles and one assist in Friday’s 27-14 win against New Orleans.
Hargrave had a sack for a loss of 8 yards and he also batted down a pass.
The third-round pick is a nose tackle in Pittsburgh’s 3-4 base defense and he’s moving to the left tackle position in Pittsburgh’s 4-2-5 nickel package.

Romar Morris (Salisbury, UNC) missed his second straight preseason game on Saturday when the New York Jets lost, 21-20, to the New York Giants.
Morris is out with an injured shoulder he sustained when he was hit hard in a Jets’ practice by safety Rontez Miles on Aug. 13.

Chris Smith (West Rowan, Arkansas) has played the most defensive snaps (88) for the Jacksonville Jaguars in their first two preseason games against the Jets and Tampa Bay Bucs.
Smith has been used only in obvious pass-rushing situations his first two seasons in the NFL, but he’s been getting a chance as an every-down lineman this preseason, and he’s also been playing more on special teams.
Smith played only 123 of the Jacksonville defense’s 1,099 snaps last season and produced just a half-sack.
He had three sacks as a rookie in 2014 after being a fifth-round draft pick.
Smith is expected to get more opportunities to shine tonight when Jacksonville hosts Cincinnati.

Safety L.J. McCray (Catawba) made two tackles for San Francisco in Friday’s 21-10 loss to Green Bay.

Intimidators
KANNAPOLIS— Dale Burdick tripled and singled as the Columbia Fireflies topped the Kannapolis Intimidators, 10-6, on Saturday. Tucker Tharp also tripled and singled.
Micker Adolfo was a home run short of the cycle for Kannapolis, scoring a couple of runs while also driving home two. Seby Zavala singled three times.
Columbia starter Chase Ingram (8-9) picked up the win despite allowing six runs and 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings. Opposing starter Max Beatty (4-6) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game.

Triples in the seventh inning by Jake Fincher and Danny Mendick led the Intimidators to a 6-3 win against Columbia on Friday.

Knights
NORFOLK, Va. — Corban Joseph homered and had three hits, driving in two as the Norfolk Tides topped the Charlotte Knights 9-5 on Saturday.
Norfolk batted around in the first inning, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs.
Jerry Sands (Catawba) had a two-run single in the fourth for the Knights.

North Hills soccer
The North Hills Christian varsity soccer team scored three early goals to claim a 3-1 victory over Carolina Christian on Friday.
The Eagles (2-0) got goals from Abraham Montalvo, Chandler May and David Zhang.
North Hills keeper Collin Lewis saved 32 of 33 shots on goal. James Houghton and Reuben Leslie had assists. in the game,
North Hills plays at Hickory Christian at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
