Area Sports Briefs: Rowan Junior Open gets started

The 9th annual Rowan Junior Open will be held today at the Club at Irish Creek and Tuesday at Warrior.
There are several age divisions. (See Scoreboard).
Defending champion Nick Lyerly will be among the first to tee off at 8 a.m.
McCanless
The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The team of Jim & Susan Wydner, Monica Green and Terrol Kendall took first place.
The team of Walt & Kim Kincaid, Azalee Story and Harry Owen placed second. Jim Wydner won closest to the pin. Story won longest putt.

Prep softball
Hope Mills South View’s Jordan Dean has committed to play softball for Catawba.
The shortstop has been chosen to the N.C. Fast Pitch Softball Coaches All-District team three times and is a two-time All-State selection.

Gray Stone pitcher Madison Hunter, an all-district player, has committed to Catawba.

Prep football
Concord’s Hamsah Nasirildeen (6-4, 215) committed to South Carolina recently, choosing the Gamecocks over Florida, Florida State and a lot of others.
Nasirildeen, a safety/linebacker/receiver, will most likely be a linebacker in college.
He’s considered the No. 1 prospect in North Carolina and one of the top 10 outside linebackers nationally.
Nasirildeen was credited with 16 solo tackles in the Spiders’ 31-19 to A.l. Brown on Thursday.

Prep soccer
Salisbury plays a home doubleheader tonight against Ledford, with the jayvees starting at 5 p.m. The varsity will start at about 6:30 p.m.
North Hills
North Hills Christian rallied for a 3-2 win against Tri-City Christian in the Eagles’ season opener.
Freshman Reuben Leslie and senior David Zhang had goals as North Hills tied the match at 2-all.
Sophomore James Houghton nailed the game-winner with seven minutes left.
Houghton and freshman Abraham Montalvo had assists. Collin Lewis recorded 23 saves, including a penalty kick.
North Hills plays at Carolina Christian on Friday at 7 p.m.
