Area Sports Briefs: Rowan Legion plays today in Shelby

Rowan County (38-11) starts pool play in the World Series in Shelby today with a 12:30 p.m. game against Rockport, Ind. (32-1).
John Owen (6-1) is expected to pitch for Rowan County.
Rowan will play pool games today, Friday and Sunday. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the semifinals.
Rowan’s Lee Poteat and Jake Pritchard batted .400 in the Southeast Regional. Jakob Shuler batted .368 in the Great Lakes Regional to lead Rockport.
The top hitter in all the regionals was Omaha’s Zach Luckey, who batted .636.
The top RBI man in the regionals was Angelo Bartolin of San Mateo, Calif., in the Western Regional. Bartolin signed with Loyola Marymount. Bartolin hit two homers.
Dillon Plew, the shortstop for Kennewick, Wash., had 10 RBIs and scored 13 runs in the Northwest Regional. He’s headed to Washington State.
Rockport’s Jesse Stallings pitched 18 2/3 innings in the Great Lakes Regional, including 10 2/3 in one game.
Kennewick pitcher Gerald Hein led the regionals with 14 strikeouts.

Showcase baseball
Carson’s Cameron Prugh went 5-0 with five saves and 36 strikeouts for the South Charlotte Panthers this summer.
Carson’s Maddux Holshouser was 4-0 with a 1.77 ERA for the S.C. Panthers.
A.L. Brown’s Clayton Gilmore was 4-1 for the S.C. Panthers and struck out 25 batters.

Prep football
Some scheduled scrimmages were affected by wet fields on Wednesday, including a big one at Winston-Salem’s Deaton-Thompson Stadium that was canceled due to unplayable conditions.

In the Carolina Preps Jamboreee at Rocky River High on Friday, North Rowan will scrimmage Hickory Ridge at 4:30 p.m. and West Rowan will scrimmage Charlotte Catholic at 7:30 p.m.

Intimidators win
HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Seby Zavala hit a run-scoring single in the eighth inning, leading the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 3-2 win over the Hagerstown Suns on Wednesday.
With the victory, the Intimidators swept the three-game series.
Dylan Barrow (3-1) got the win in relief while Carlos Acevedo (0-1) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game. Ian Hamilton pitched two scoreless innings for his fifth save of the season.
With the win, Kannapolis improved to 9-4 against Hagerstown this season.

Knights lose
CHARLOTTE— Jose Peraza hit a run-scoring single in the eighth inning to give the Louisville Bats a 3-2 win over the Charlotte Knights on Wednesday.
Daniel Wright (4-5) got the win in relief while Juan Minaya (3-2) took the loss in the International League game.
Leury Garcia doubled and singled twice for the Knights. Delmonico singled twice, also stealing a base.

Pelicans
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Joseph Monge scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 10th to lead the Salem Red Sox to a 2-1 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
