SALISBURY — After cycling 2,778 miles, David Freeze deserves a celebration.

Freeze will be at the Salisbury Post, 131 W. Innes St., for a public reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday. He’ll have his trusty Surly long-haul bike with him.

Freeze recently traversed the famed Route 66 from California to Chicago, all over 38 very hot days. Each evening he sent a report of the day’s events to the Salisbury Post to be published in the next day’s paper.

Freeze went through 117-degree heat, visited the Grand Canyon, saw a blue whale and more — Elvis, for example — and consumed large quantities of pancakes and pineapple milkshakes. Did we mention he crossed the Mojave Desert?

This was Freeze’s fourth cross-country bicycle trip, and he has sent the Post nightly reports on every one of them. They add up to nearly 10,000 miles.
