Rowan weather: Heat problems, bad air

The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality has issued a code orange air quality action day for ground level ozone from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. tonight.

In addition, high temperatures in the mid to upper 90s today, with moderate humidity levels, could result in a heat index of 100 to 104 between 2 and 5 p.m. today.

Children, older adults and those with heart or respiratory diseases, including asthma, should avoid outdoor activity during the day.

Today will be sunny and 96, with mostly calm wind, becoming southwest at 5-7 mph this afternoon. Tonight’s low will be 74 with south southwest wind at 3-5 mph.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny and 93, with heat index values around 100 degrees. A 20 percent chance of showers and storms is possible after 1 p.m. Calm wind again, picking up from the southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon.

Tuesday night has a 30 percent chance of showers and storms before midnight, with mostly cloudy skies and a low of 72.

Wednesday has a 40 percent chance of showers and storms, mainly afternoon. Skies will be partly sunny with a high of 92, and calm wind, becoming west southwest at 5 mph in the afternoon.

The chance of rain drops to 30 percent Wednesday night. The low will be 71.

Thursday will see partly sunny skies and a high of 91, with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms from 10 a.m. on. The same chance of rain is possible Thursday night, with a low of 72.

A pattern has been set for a 30 percent chance of showers and storms Thursday night through Sunday.

Friday’s high will be 91, with partly sunny skies and the rain chance mainly after 4 p.m. Friday night, the chance is before 8 p.m., with a low of 72.

Saturday will be partly sunny and 90 with the 30 percent chance of showers and storms. The low will be 71, with the same chance of rain.

Sunday will be partly sunny and 91, with the usual 30 percent chance of showers and storms.
